    sequin fabric?

    Hi there,

I'm wanting to make a sequin 3 panel skirt, but I'm confused about what to buy. Anybody have any experience with sequin fabric? What is dangle scale? Do you like the mesh or jersey? I was leaning towards the jersey, until I found the color I like in the dangle scale. Since it's pretty pricey I don't want to buy the wrong kind.

And my last question is, do you have any website that you prefer?

    Thanks in advance!

    Tabitha

I'm working with the dangle scale right now -- imagine small paillettes (flat sequins with a hole at the edge as opposed to the center) hanging from threads on mesh.

I'm covering a bra and belt with this -- it is difficult to work with and I can't imagine making a skirt other than perhaps a simple sheath or straight skirt with it. I would definitely line it or wear on top of another skirt.

I'm betting (literally -- I plan to purchase some) that the regular sequins sewn on jersey are easier to work with than the dangle scale. However, you won't get the movement with the sequins that you do with the paillettes.

    Good luck! -- maia

    Thank you!

I bra and belt I bet will be pretty with the danglies. I didn't think of lining up the panels with the dangles though. I think I'm going to go with the jersey with a chiffon underskirt. That way with the jersey I can have some stretch to make arm thingies.

    Thanks again!

Fabric glue! Test a little bit first, you want it to dry clear, invisible, but flexible. Then, before cutting out your pieces, glue down any strings that cross the cutting lines, to prevent unraveling. I often repurpose beaded clothing, I like to draw the cutting line with a thin bead of glue. Then I smear it into a flat ribbon and let it dry. Finally, I cut along the center of the ribbon, so each cut edge is sealed and nothing unravels.

Just saw this thread looking for something else. If you want to make a panel skirt, the best fabric to use is sequined chiffon. It is pricey, but fabulous. Did you ever make a skirt?

Here's a pic of one of mine in turquoise.

    Hi Norma,
No I never did... Like you said, it's pricey! Once I priced it out it was going to come to $300. But now my intrest is peaked again! Hmmm, maybe smaller pannels would be the way to go.

That's about right. Sequined chiffon is expensive. But so beautiful on stage. My turquoise is $500 but that's because there is a lot of extra fabric involved in the ruffle. I have a black and gold one for $300. Both include capes.

You really don't want to go with smaller panels unless you plan on using the skirt as an overskirt, with another layer underneath. I made a trumpet style skirt out of sequined chiffon, and I always wished I had made it a tad bit fuller.

I'll add a pic of it.

Or, maybe you could use a small panel in the front and a smaller panel in back and have additional panels made out of another fabric. Mmmm. That would look pretty. I envision a middle panel of sequined chiffon, then a smaller panel on each side of matching plain chiffon. You could trim the edges with sequin trim. Or not.

Thanks for the tip, very helpful. So what I'm taking away from this is when it cones to sequin fabric, go big or go home.

Norma, isn't the lighter skirt pictured in Post #7 the same one you're wearing in the lovely "Sit el Hosn" clip from the other thread?

Yes it is! It's in the Video forum, if anyone wants to watch the skirt in action.
