    Question Hot roller recommendations?

I've started growing my hair out from my former chin-length style & I'm thinking about trying hot rollers to add volume & curl to my limp, straight, baby fine locks. My hair is currently just about reaching shoulder length with the shortest layers (aside from my bangs) about a half inch below the top of my ears.

I've never used rollers before & hope Bhuzzers can recommend the best affordable brand. Also wondering what size I should use?

ETA: The hair in my profile pic is actually a clip-on ponytail. My bangs are still pretty much the same though.

I have super straight hair and I've never had good luck with hot rollers. After all the work, my hair just goes limp. I can get my best curls with those goofy, pink, foamy rollers if I put up my hair when it’s wet and let it dry.

I researched this a little when I wanted a set of hot rollers and ended up buying the Conair CHV26HX C Xtreme Instant Heat Hair Care rollers. Here's a link so you can see what they look like. I think they do a decent job on my hair, which is bra band length.

Do you use a gel or setting lotion before you put the curlers on?

I don't. I'm usually going for more of a soft wavy look than real curls, so I'm good with a little of the curl falling out of my hair after I take the rollers out. Here's a pic of what my hair looks like when I use hot rollers.

Another vote for the Conair CHV26HX C Xtreme Instant Heat Hair Care. A long, damp set with foam rollers lasts much longer, but I'm not usually organized early enough to make that happen.

I haven't loved the setting lotions I've tried so far -- they've been too heavy for my fine, wimpy hair. Last night I tried a light spritz of Aussie "Sprunch" spray on each section before rolling with the hot rollers, followed by a spritz all over after setting, and I still had waves and body at the end of the night. I think we may have a winner.

    Re: Hot roller recommendations?

Thanx all. I was already leaning toward Conair since it's a brand I know & trust. Right now I use a 3/4" curling iron all over, then finger comb upside down & spray, flip upright, smooth into place & spray again. It looks nice & full & curly for about an hour tops, then I lose the volume. By the end of the day if I'm lucky I'll still have a bit of wave. I don't know if hot rollers would give a better result or be worth the extra time & effort. Just something I was considering trying.

    Re: Hot roller recommendations?

If you like the look you get with a curling iron but want it to last longer, have you tried a curling iron/roller set? It's quicker than a wet set and lasts longer than the curling iron alone. Results are similar to hot rollers for me--maybe better because the rollers themselves are much lighter in weight and don't pull on the hair.

Curl with the iron as you normally would, but as soon as you release each curl from the iron, quickly roll it back up on a roller (I use smooth ones, some use velcro), pin it, and spray if desired. Leave it in for as long as you can but at least until it's completely cool. There are tutorials on YouTube, but them's the basics. :)

Thanks Suzana! Between that idea & the Aussie spray, I might actually be able to get a look I'm happy with.

I have wavy hair that is very long and thus pulls out heat-set curls quickly. I found that I had the most luck with a Caruso system -- those curls would just last and last. I also made sure not to try and put too much hair on one roller.

I have fine, straight hair, and this has been my experience as well with Caruso. I also would use a light setting spray gel. My biggest issue tends to be patience. ;-)
