Old looking hands
Is there a way to improve the look of the skin on hands? I've always heard that and neck are the first places to show age, but with me it's mostly hands.

I don't have an answer but I sure hope someone does! Dry skin, age spots, rheumatoid arthritis, wrinkles.

Re: Old looking hands
The fact that Madonna's hands look like mummified chicken feet must indicate that even the best plastic surgeons money can buy can't find a good fix for this problem. Regular use of quality moisturizers will help a little. Some people swear by paraffin treatments, or wearing Vaseline and cotton gloves at night. I think some plastic surgeons have experimented with filler injections, and there are skin peels and other chemical treatments that will address age spots and discoloration.
As a dancer, you can always try wearing properly fitted hand flowers or those gauntlets that come way down and loop over a finger as camouflage for most of the real estate on the tops of your hands, but if you can figure out how to reverse the appearance of old-looking hands, patent the idea, because every woman in Hollywood over 40 will want a piece of it.

Re: Old looking hands
When someone says use lotion, they are not talking in the morning and in the night. they are talking constantly. As in when you sit down at your desk, after you have gone to the restroom and washed your hands, when you have been at your computer for a while. I learned this from an old para legal who had the most beautiful hands. every morning there was an ritual in the office that all of the paralegals would gather, have coffee and rub their hands and arms down with Jergens. This helped to prevent paper cuts and the side product was beautiful hands!
I like doing deep treatments when I have long trips. People look at you oddly when you have cotton gloves on while flying cross country, but hey, at the end of your flight your hands are much softer. Do your feet at the same time. I use Shea butter.

Re: Old looking hands
Nice ideas, I'll be watching for more. Regarding the daily moisturizing, make sure you lotion up every time your hands get wet. After you shower, after washing hands every time, and most especially after washing dishes. If you get the lotion (or shea butter or oil or whatever emollient infusion you wish) on within the first 3 minutes of your hands leaving the water than you are still sealing in moisture (this eczema treatment carries over to dry hands).
Also if occasional dry/wrinkled hands are a problem, check your essential fatty acid intake and of course stay hydrated. :)

Re: Old looking hands
I have some -- ahem -- freckles that seem to have morphed into larger, less-freckle-like things on my hands. Freckles can be cute across one's nose, but not so great on the hands!
As Tourbeau mentioned as a possible cover-up, gloves ending in a point with the elastic around the middle finger do cover a lot of real estate, and are often just the amount of camoflauge I desire.
I have also used facial concealer. Put lots of lotion on, let it sit, then carefully dab on the concealer. I try to keep the concealer on the offending spot only, then gently feather the edges to blend with the rest of my hand. It works very well. Once on, it's also pretty easy to touch up if some wears off. Because concealer will rub off, I generally apply it as one of the last things I do before I leave the house, if doing a party-type gig, or put it on a bit before my performance if doing a show. (Big stage shows often don't require this type of coverage due to the fancy lighting and distance from the audience.)
Lotion, lotion and more lotion -- of whatever variety -- is key, as Nasila so eloquently stated.

Re: Old looking hands
I have had a zapper thingy (laser?) used by a spa person on my facial spot that looks like the nation of Iraq next to my left eye. Worked well for 3 years, and then it came back. She tried it on the back of my hand first to show me what it felt like (worse there due to more nerve endings in the hands). I need to go back and get it zapped again, and just bite the stick and get the hands done as well. They scab, heal and fall off within 4,5 days. No spot, no scar!

Re: Old looking hands
AmLactin .... used to be attainable by prescription only; now you can get it at Walgreen's over the counter. Lotion in a tube or pump. It restores moisture to the skin like nothing else. When your skin cracks in cold weather -- on the hands and especially the heels of your feet -- putting this on at night works wonders. In fact, I've rubbed it into cuts and they heal unbelievably fast. HOWEVER, it smells just awful (to me, anyway) and feels kind of sticky, so I'd only put it on at night. But your hands will feel softer the next morning! I've had these nasty white spots on the back of my hands for years that I started to think were from those machines they use in nail salons to dry fibergel .... turns out it's likely just super dry skin, so I tried the AmLactin, and already see a huge improvement! Skin def loooks younger with this stuff. One more warning: When you apply it to a cut or scrape, it will sting like crazy for a few seconds, but the results are worth it! (My Mom originally was given a prescription for this by a podiatrist; now anyone can get it.)

Re: Old looking hands
I kind of like the look of hands that have lived and worked, to be honest. Not a lot wrong with owning that they did and have.
I do find Aveeno's moisturisers very good for regular all-over moisturising. But mostly all I've ever done for my hands is rub in the excess of any moisturiser I use, any oil I handle, etc. I do tend to keep them out of the sun, which unfortunately is not something one can do so easily with the face. And I avoid cleaning, lol.
ETA: I had horrific dermatitis when I was a hairdresser - and when I say horrific I do mean that people used to go 'Oh my GOD what happened to your HAND?!?' - and almost all products were painful or itchy to use. The only thing I could use was bog-standard barrier cream, which was very greasy and impractical, and a chemist-made cream containing icthyol, which I don't think is used much any more, but which was the only thing that healed the cracks.Last edited by Zumarrad; 01-14-2011 at 09:47 PM.

Ambi fade cream works great on brown spots. I swear by the stuff: originally bought it for melasma on my face and tried it on the backs of my hands and forearms. Works pretty fast too, within a couple weeks. Kind of stinky though...

Re: Old looking hands
1.Prevention/protection:Sunscreen,every day. There are many hand creams with spf,or an ordinary sunscreen will do(minimum 15)
2.Correction:AHA and/or hydroquinone lotions used at night.
3.Moisture...it can be anything greasy, like Intensive Healing hand cream from St.Ives,Neutrogena´s Norwegian Formula or Aquaphor.(Use at night under cotton gloves)
I´ve seen very good results on age spots with IPL&laser, and with Restylane Vital for Madonna/Angelina Jolie-like skinny hands.
Or go the Isabelle Adjani route:

Lemony Flutter by LUSH is pricey, but also organic, without animal testing and smells heavenly! I no longer use it because it's not vegan, but it's absolutely amazing. Rather oily, though - I'd definitely use it when I don't have to touch things for a couple of minutes afterwards.
