    Painted designs on silk veils

    Hi all,

I only dance with silk veils (love the flow and find that aesthetically they are unmatched) but I usually dance with the ones with stripes or solid coloring. I was wondering if anyone had some gorgeous handpainted silk ones that also had a design painted on them? I'm not sure if the additional detail will be beautiful or lost in movement or distracting from the dancer/her costume? Thoughts?

    Thanks!

This popped into my mind immediately....

scroll down and you will see the lovely Qamar60 and her butterfly veil. Absolutely gorgeous! I believe she may have made it herself (?? and please correct me if I am wrong) This is a very good example of a patterned veil working well

Other than that, I haven't come across patterned veils, for sale or in a collection.

I may be imagining it, but I thought I saw some at A'kai a while back that had some little flowers or something painted on them. Jesennia, are you out there?

That's a really neat idea. Not something you'd want to use every time, but that could really do some interesting things for a performance.

    Thank you!

Yes, I made it using a large embrodery ring and Setasilk mediums from Pebeo.

Also those big makers (same company) Setaskrib are fun an easy to use. I printed butterfly patterns in different sizes, place the paper under the fabric (embrodery ring) and just follow the drawing of the design.

I have to be honest and mention that is a few OOPS on that veil, but nothing that is noticable upfar when you are dancing.

    Have fun with your project.

Re: Painted designs on silk veils

I used to hand-paint silk veils with all sorts of stuff - maybe next week when I'm less busy I'll come back and post some photos of my work on silk. I think it depends on the design, some will just get lost on stage, but some can totally enhance the dance.

David Ludwig has done some really interesting work - I really like his Scheherezade inspired veils.

Also Helena Datura danced with a veil she painted herself for Project Belly Dance - you can see her performance a 7:11 in the first clip of solos from Episode 1 here:

You can see some of the swirls and briefly the moth that is on there.

Here is a hand-painted A'kai that I received last month from my Secret Habibi. It's painted on both ends. (Forgive the wrinkles... I hadn't ironed it yet)

We have a fabulous artist in Montreal who does hand-painted work on silk. This is a great video to show the effect:

That is a BEAUTIFUL veil!! So the Setasilk didn't change the way the fabric moved? Cool... I'm going to try that. Thank you for the inspiration!
