Thread: Hipscarf Dilemma

Hiya there,

my teacher just returned from Cairo a week ago and as always, she brought back lots of beautiful things for her boutique. Among them a really stunning hipscarf that's sort of see-through with metallic patterns and stripes inside the fabric - the base is dark brown, the colours dark teal and gold and if it hits the light the right way, there's a dark red shimmer to it as well. It's BEAUTIFUL.

Now here's the deal. I wear a lot of black everyday and my mesh body (like this) and dance pants are black as well and everyone has been telling me to get the pink/gold version (the base is black) because it fits better with the black, but I don't like pink at all.

It's true, however, that the brown loses a good deal of its beauty next to all the black. So what do I do now? It's quite pricey, roughly 35€, and although I do have quite enough money to spare right now, I'm always cautious spending so much on a fashion article.

My mother suggested I could take the hipscarf as a start to build more colour into my dance wardrobe. My question is, is there any place that sells mesh bodies that would go with the colour of the scarf? Preferably dark teal because I love that colour, but I suppose a dark blue would work too. Or is it very hard to find dance pants in this kind of colour?

I guess it's silly to open a thread over a hipscarf but I'm such a money-conscious person that paying 35$ for a piece of fabric with some coins is a big decision for me Do you think I should buy the scarf and start building more colour around it? I think that teal, gold, plum, white and dark blue suit me very well, so maybe it's time I moved away from black a little?

Gosh, I feel like an idiot, haha! Sorry if I wasted your time. I guess I'm just not used to having money to spend without strictly having to turn every cent over

GO WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE!!!!! Absolutely. You'll never love the other one as much. Really. Who cares if it is easier to match if you don't like pink. Everything goes with black. You can wear it with regular clothes if you want. You'll feel more beautiful in the one that first caught your eye. Also, if you want to broaden your costume color range, you're far more likely to embrace new color if you're starting with the colors you like.

Buy it. Buy it NOW!

Ask yourself how you'll feel if you miss the chance to buy the one you love. If you feel sad about "the one that got away" then BUY IT!!!!

To add to the chorus - If you write such a long post about it, you have made up your mind already :) Buy it, call it an investment for the future. Don't get talked into buying something that is second best in your mind, because you will *always* compare it to your first love...!

Otherwise, and being ruled by the all mighty budget myself - would your teacher be willing to hold it and not sell it for a week? My rule of falling in lust with something that may be a tad out of my budget is to wait a week. If I find myself thinking about it the whole week, designing around it all that time, and still am in love by the end, then it was mine to begin with, its just a matter of getting my property back at that point

That's my rule too (especially on etsy). If it was gone when I went back to the store, it wasn't supposed to be mine.

I'm in class tomorrow night and my teacher said she'd keep both off the shelf until I'd made up my mind, so I guess I'll take along some extra cash tomorrow I'll post pictures!

It's your disposable income. You earned it. Don't ruin everything by buying a scarf you never wanted to begin with, and letting the one you want get away!

Besides, you know that if you DON'T buy it, 8 months from now you'll find yourself putting together an outfit that this scarf would be the perfect finishing touch for.

LOL! You make me think of me; I'd start a thread like this too. My teacher makes hipscarves and there's one she made that is just gorgeous, blue and green with a sort of watercolor effect and...well, it's just great. I just love the fabric (more than I love it as a hip scarf) and I keep trying to come up with something to have her make for me from that fabric because she said she still has more of it. But I can't think of anything...don't really want anything so large as a skirt or pants even if she had that much...thought of a veil but I don't know if that fabric would work well as a veil or not...it doesn't scream "top" to me.

I agree you should get it. I realize I'm the person who sometimes buys something that doesn't match anything else I own, planning to find stuff that DOES match it in future, and then never does and has unworn clothing lying about, but...if you do end up never wearing it, you can always sell it, right? But as someone else said, you might regret if you don't get it and then it's gone later. Because if your luck is like mine, as soon as somebody else buys it, you'll find the perfect clothing to match it.

if you like it buy it. if its for dance class I can careless if i match i'm in class. I have scarves in a variety of colors since i wear black in class i can wear which ever one i feel like. I am not a coin scarf person so i stick to beaded ones(personal taste)
