    costume maid?

So this is a rant. but does anyone else ever feel like they need a 16th century ladies maid to get into their costume? expecially ones that have straps that cross in the back? i just can not get the bra on solo!

sooo aggrivating. if it wasnt so pretty id contemplate burning it!! (joke..sorta..)

yes, i hope there's always someone to help me too! one time i when i put on the bra, instead of hooking the 'eye' i hooked one a strand of sequince. luckily my friend was there to tell me what was wrong. since then i'm always a bit nervous.

That's what other belly dancers backstage are for!

I mostly perform in community shows where there are other dancers around. But if you are dancing at a restaurant and you are the only dancer, it would be more difficult, for sure!

So glad to hear this is a general problem and not just me being an idiot!Being stuck in the middle of nowhere and buying online/making most of my stuff, I'm aware I have the scruffy "tourist" outfits BHUZ hates so much

However, I really thought that I was the problem and have spent hours trying to work out how it's done.

I know that wasn't the theme of this thread, but I just want to thank you for making me feel much less stupid!

yar i have a couple things that r poping up. i should get another costume that has a halter for em i guess. i just like the support of the x back cuz im so busty and i get a lot of support and non movingness w/o it all being on my neck.

or ill prob reverse the hooks so they are on the front instead of the back. i rem reading something like that on bhuz

Ive found that the smartes thing when it comes to bras, is V-backs. Then you just hook the backstrap on your tummy, turn it around, and put your arms through the loops.

    (like a normal bra)

OR instead of crossing the straps, and sewing them to the other side strap, you can sew them to the edge of the same strap. Lol.. hard to explain. But then you just overlap to get the X in the back =)

I've had x-back bras (which i also like for the support and because I've had neck injuries, which halters can aggravate) that hook in the front. The straps, or one strap, hooks in the front at the top of the cup. Just be sure that there is velcro or two-way hooks to prevent costume malfunction!

Amen! I also thought I was the only one who had this issue until I started asking around. I have a hard time with even just the regular ones. Lucky for me my husband comes with me to gigs and helps. I have no idea what I am going to do if he ever has to work late at night. lol. Prob go already in costume.
@dunyah, yup! thats the way to go. I have one costume that has an X back and I have the hooks in the front of the cup. Soooooo much easier!

Yep, I've had some costumes that I've had trouble getting into. It would be a workout just to maneuver my arms and fingers to whereevery they needed to go. I usually managed on my own but sometimes I've had to send the busboy in urgent search of waitress. Sometimes, in desperation I've had to grab a singer or band member. Who of course always offered to help me unhook rather than hook.

    Re: costume maid?

i wear most of my bras X-ed in the back, so am used to getting in and out of them ^^
basically, i pull them on like a t-shirt: shoulder straps might as well be sewn on cos i never unhook them, only the back strap i have to hook behind my back but with a bit of practice that's easy.
the hardest part is getting used to putting your arms and head through the right place ;)

It works, but I used trouser hooks, and I added big snaps; that worked GREAT!

Yeah, unfortunately there's a size limit on the over-the-head approach! Even hooking the band in the back can be impossible.

Seconding (thirding?) the X-back with straps fastened into the cups. You get the look of a halter in the front, the stability of over-the-shoulder straps, and easy on/off. Most important, the weight of your bosom doesn't threaten to dislocate your neck or saw your head off. It's a win all around.
