Costume rings?
I am planning my new costume and would like to work with rings, like the "ring of desire" costumes. Covering the rings with fabric and then decorating.
Does anybody know what the rings are made off, Acrylic, metal? What sizes/thickness do you use? Do you have a good source where to buy them?
I hope the Bhuz wisdom can help me, thank you Ladies :-)

I did a rings costume once and made my own "chain of rings" out of buckram.

Re: Costume rings?
caasious, that was my next step the good old hardware store. I was just wondering what the costume designers use. I thought metal would be stronger then acrylic could break

I'm not familiar with the "ring of desire" type costumes. Can you like some pics so I can see what you mean?

hard ware store- I use rings for lots of things- Lowes and Homedept are you friend- they make many different sizes- my biggest ones that I use are 1.5- after that it just gets excessive- but covering wtih fabric you might get away with 2 inches depending on how thick the fabirc is.

Re: Costume rings?
basha, thank you for posting the costume thread. the rings on the belt look about 3" diameter to me and thick, most be layers of fabric because all the rings I found so far are pretty thin.

Re: Costume rings?
A friend of mine makes baby slings with these rings, and I've been wondering for a while how they would work for a costume- strong enough to hold up a baby/toddler should be strong enough for my beads! Brushed aluminum would be a lot lighter than the steel you get at the hardware store, and I like the idea of playing with the colors they come in rather than completely covering them. Check it out:

Re: Costume rings?
Thank you for getting back to me, I thought metal would be more sturdy. I bought some at the hardware store but they only had them up to 2". Now I know what to look for. I can't wait to start the costume, the seamstress is almost done with the skirt and top.

Re: Costume rings?
This is a slight spin off question...
I always wondered if a ring would rust with Perspiration and air (boo oxidation), especially if the cloth keeps moisture... or could you ever wash the costume?
I always want to try, but every time I sketch I imagine the cloth being eaten away from the inside. >_<
I See Bathing suits with "metal" rings (plastic with metallic paint).
Steel is mainly made of Iron. :/
---------
And I will agree with Lara L... I've bought chain mail from theringlord.com and had some fun with different colored rings!

I need to figure out how to have the photos not run off the screen >_> and still link from other sites <_<Cheers, Ayla "With these Bedlah, we could be Habibi Barbie, Saidi Sally, & Tribal Fusion Tracy?!"

Re: Costume rings?
I thought about that also. I reworked an older costumes which had rusted hooks. Maybe I will try the aluminum rings but I like the weight of the steel rings....mmmh

Re: Costume rings?
You could try using some kind of sealant on the rings to minimize rusting. Spray paint or another type of aerosol top coat should help. If you're really worried about it, you might even try something like Plasti Dip.
