    Sources for Beaded Fringe?

I'm looking for royal purple and dark green/olive/teal iris fringe to match projects. What are some sources for (preferably good quality) fringe?
    So far I have:

    Turquoise Intl.
    King of the Nile
    Horus & Isis
    Dahlal
    Scheherezade Imports
    Ebay

I have used ebay fringe and never found good quality... they shed till they are almost bare. I definitely recommend horus and isis. They have great customer service, great quality, and can make whatever fringe you want. They also have good prices I think.

Thank you. I have emailed horus & isis because I couldn't find a list or pictures of colors they have available for order on their website.

I'm hoping to avoid ebay, but anything other than needle and thread!!!

Fellow bhuzer Palmier has an online store with a small amount of fringe on hand. But, my "go to" source is King of the Nile.

I've never had a problem with the fringe from Turquoise International or Scherezade Imports.

You can custom order if they don't have the color you want but it could take months to get it in.

I don't think I've ever seen royal purple. Just a medium purple and a dark purple iris. You might have better luck going with a dark blue or dark navy blue iris?

A vendor told me years ago that the reason those rich, mid-hue purples are so rare is that the beads don't tend to hold up well--something about the chemical composition of the glass. If you were going for a modern style, you could work around this by using a neutral (gold, silver, black) bead base with actual amethyst accent beads (nature makes a stable, purple color), but that won't work to match an existing costume.

    Re: Sources for Beaded Fringe?

Honestly, these vendors that have been listed sell cheap Egyptian fringe. I prefer Turkish fringe (beads are sparklier as they are silver-lined, and smoother so they dont cut the thread with movement/time). I don't ever use Egyptian beads, and in fact shy away from any costume with Egyptian beading on it due to this poor quality, which literally makes the costume die after about 1 year. I handmake all my fringe with japanese jewelry beads, carpet thread, and beeswax, which I find to be the most high-quality in sparkle and longevity. I would recommend ordering a 1/2 kilo from a store online. Unfortunately I order mine in person so prolly not helpful on an widespread thread, but call around to jewelry bead stores in your area, they all can order them for you. To give you an idea about price/amount: half kilos cost me about $20 for basic colors (though some range up to $70 for the really unique bead colors but I'd say that's like less than 10% of the colors available). One 1/2 kilo sized bag of beads will make me 2 costumes of heavy fringe... I've got a bag of copper half-kilo beads that's lasted me for 3 separate costumes (more modern and less fringe, think like a Hanan or older Eman-amount of fringe).

For your specific colors: I've seen the dark royal purple, with an iridescent peacock look for about $25 a half-kilo. The teal and gold beads at the store I go to are about the same price. The olive green is about $40 for the half kilo.

    Hope that helps!

Could you be more specific about what you mean by "heavy fringe"? In other words, if you are talking about fringe without gaps between the strands, how long is this in terms of length and drop? Over here (http://www.bhuz.com/showthread.php/4...skirt-o-fringe), shahla reported that a meter of 6" fringe weighed 19 oz. (0.54 kg). Is that consistent with your results? What size beads are you using?

    Re: Sources for Beaded Fringe?

By heavy fringe I mean making a costume (usually a bra/belt set) like the Sim Moda/Oriental Originals "Regal Chiffon." Something that has 3 layers of fringe (each strand approximately 2" long) on each bra cup and at least 2 layers on the belt, with a long 3rd layer hanging off. I use short bugles. They catch the light better than rounds or hex beads, but I add a round or hex to the bottom for that finished look. Cant say about the weight, sorry.

Also a note, I'd put at least 1-2 mm between fringe strands. Putting them too "together" 1) makes the costume super heavy and more importantly 2) doesnt show movement as well as strands that are a little better spaced (surprising but if you try to make 2 samples, 1 close together and the other with a smidge space you will see what I'm talking about!) I've had multiple dancers disagree with this until they make the sample, after which they immediately agree.

Hope this helps? Also I should amend my earlier post: the olive beads I saw were $50, not $40 for the half kilo.. but of course this price will differ on each bead store...

Yes. Almost all of it is crap. The beads have sharp edges that will cut the thread they are strung on. I would recommend staying away from it. It's worth the investment in the good stuff.

I would say that it's possible on occasion to find good quality fringe on Ebay from time to time, but it's often a rare occurance. All the $10/meter fringe is junk.

    Can't say I blame you.

PS I've had mixed experience with Ebay fringe. I have gotten a GORGEOUS piece, pale green opalescent beads - but some gold and silver that was dull and oxidized and I wasn't happy at all. Both were from Egypt and may have been from the same vendor.

    So oh well.

Are the Japanese jewelry beads you use glass or plastic? Thanks.
