I always troll thrift stores and antique stores to find the really interesting ones.

Shipping is a bit much, but the prices on the pieces themselves is quite reasonable, and there is a good selection and a lot that matches (which is nice for troupes)

It won't help now, but another idea is to keep your eye open for after-Christmas sales. A lot of boxed costume pins designed for last-minute presents or party-wear will be reduced after the holidays, and you can pick up multiples of rhinestone pins on the cheap that way.

You might find a few things at Fire Mountain Gems you can use.

That is very pretty, and would look fantastic with one at each bra strap / cup joint of a specific ice blue bedlah I have, one between the cups, and then a row of them across the top of the belt. How would I attach them? There's no pin on the back of this brooch. I guess you would loop a similar colored thread between the different stones of the brooch and then sew it on?

I should be getting them within the next few days or so. I will take a picture of the back so that you guys can see what it looks like. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to attach them, either...

So... actually, they came in the mail yesterday, but both my husband and I each thought that the other got the mail!

They are SSSOOO pretty and sparkly! The blue rivolis are about the size of a penny.

Here's the thing though, the crystals are hot glued onto like a cheesecloth backing, so I'm not quite sure how to attach them to anything.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to secure these to a costume?

I've never heard of this before. Usually these kinds of shaped rhinestone collections are in a setting of some sort. I've seen costume rhinestones that were glued into molded metal or that had a custom backing with prongs, but not a glob of glue with the stones sunken into them. Usually you'd want to avoid this because gluing directly onto the foil backing doesn't make a good long-term bond (sometimes the glue discolors the foil; other times, the adhesive fails and the stone dislodges, leaving its foil behind).

Depending on how much room there is between the stones, you might be able to sew the piece on with clear nylon thread. Otherwise, you could glue it to a different backing that you sewed on. I suppose my third choice would be to just glue the whole thing onto the costume, but if stones start shedding/discoloring (and optimism about the quality life span of these pieces is low with that kind of backing), then you may have to scrap the costume. At least if the pieces are only sewn on, you can remove them without too much trauma to the costume base, and you could wangle a new replacement fix.

How are these working out for you? I'm still tempted to get a few.

I haven't gotten a chance to start working with them yet, but what I think I'm going to do is glue them to coordinating fabric-covered felt, and turn them into appliques with additional beading around them. They are off of the color that I needed, so I'm waiting for a new project to start with them. :)
