Thread: Metalskin and Sweat?

The student troupe I’m in is planning on ordering metalskin beledi dresses from L. Rose, but they’re worried about sweat. We poured some water on the fabric swatches, and it really doesn’t make the color change from the outside. The inside view of the fabric looked darker. Has anyone had trouble with sweat and metalskin, or it is pretty good?

Maybe you could ask the people at L Rose? And you might consider getting the "cold armpit" design.

I have had a few pieces in metalskin and I didn't like the plastic-y feeling of the fabric, although it sparkles like crazy and looks beautiful.

It all depends on the quality of the metalskin fabric. L.Rose has a great reputation, so I'm guessing they use top quality metalskin. People generally seem very happy with their products.

I did have have an embarrassing metalskin fabric experience with a top once, but from a different vendor. By the end of the evening, the "metal" had worn from the underarms and left bare black lycra to highlight my underarms. Since then, I've sworn off all heavily metallic treated Lycra

Can you get a sample from the bolt they will use, and give it stress tests?

We have the small fabric swatches, and they seemed to be okay when getting wet with water. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with dresses, skirts, or even tops.

is metalskin same as metallic?

i had a gold eman metallic fabric when i got it the shine already disappeared and when i wore it and sweated in it, it became worse and on the thigh it became nude colour. it was very bad.

i also had a pair of sharifwear metallic pants. the shine faded in a few weeks but i guess i sweat a lot. maybe if i wash them after wear immediately instead of putting in the dirty clothes bucket it would have last longer.

so if you want to test the fabric i think you need to put some sweat on it instead of water.

I remember this! It was so unfortunate. Beautiful costume. Bad quality fabric.

Exactly! Water is very different than sweat. Salts, minerals and other properties that can break down or stain fabrics. I suggest hiding a swatch in your bra at the gym. Do a full workout and see if the metallic treatment turns color. Do this a few times to see how the fabric degrades with heat and sweat...if it does.

I had a Rosehips-type overskirt in aqua metalskin and after washing it I saw that the lower back area has discolored to silver. It looked fine prior to washing. FYI

I have an LRose baladi dress and a custom meleya dress both in holographic metalskin. Both of them have the cold armpit cutouts, mostly because I didn't want my belts riding up whenever I raised my arms but also because I had some concern about the issue that happened to sabrinabellydancer, the metalskin getting rubbed off the armpits and leaving bare patches. I've worn--and seriously sweated in--both dresses several times and haven't noticed any discoloring around the pits.

I have found with a practice bra that I had made from black on black metalskin that repeated washing wears the finish off. So I'd avoid too many dress rehearsals with the dresses, and if they aren't sweated in too badly, consider airing them out rather than washing them to preserve their lifespans.
