Tips/pictures for Monolid/Asian eye makeup?
Hiya,
I have been belly dancing (cabaret) for a couple years now and I am of Koren descent (live in California). I am okay with my makeup so far, but was wondering how other Asian belly dancers do their make up. I don't really have a lot of examples around me and most tutorials are on "regular" eye lids with creases and all. My eyes can tend to look small, with all the make up, but we are suppose to wear a ton of make up...
I would love tips or pics of how you do yours!
Here is a pic of me yesterday, with my makeup.

Princess Farhana just posted a link to a blog entry about this, but I can't find it in her blog now...

I just want to say I have envied the girls with "Asian" eyes since the '60s and '70s. The hot style at that time (where I lived) was to line the entire spherical portion of the eyelid in black and extend the line outwards (meow) to the side. Exotic and fabulous!

I second Princess Farhana's advice....I'll go look too. If Azhia pops in she has fabulous advice too!
BTW you are absolutely lovely....if you haven't tried them, false eyelashes work great for accentuating the eye. My eyes are small too so I find that using half of a semicircular lash on the outside of each eyelid works well and are far easier to put on than a whole lash. Gives a nice 'doe eyed' effect.Well behaved women rarely make history.

Re: Tips/pictures for Monolid/Asian eye makeup?
Hey, as a fellow dancer with Asian eyes, I have also found that eye makeup tips that work on other dancers don't always work for me. Or at least they don't show up as much with my eye shape. I recently wrote an article posted on the Cheeky Girls website that details how I apply my eye make up... this may help! Also has some pix.

A trick Tamami passed on: suitable for performances viewed from a distance - A stage or a few feet away, not table side restaurant gigs.
After applying the regular stage eye makeup, using a light color on the lid apply the false eyelash in the crease of the lid! It's amazing how this creates the illusion of a larger eye.
She showed me how she does this, and then stepped back a few feet. Magic! You can't tell the lashes are placed higher than normal.
Of course she said to experiment with lash placement before the day of the show

Sorry for not replying earlier, been a bit sick. Thanks for all the advice. I will go check out all those links. Trying the half eyelash thing might be a good idea, they kinda act like a "shade" over my eyes, and I always forget to curl them up.

Re: Tips/pictures for Monolid/Asian eye makeup?
Hi JYoon!
I´m going to look for some videoclips instead of just pic´s/diagrams for you:)
I´ve worked in makeup, since two of my colleagues were asian(japanese&korean)I picked up some tips from them straight from Kyoto and Seoul when I saw how amazing eye designs they made!
I have very small, downturned eyes myself but these techniques make my eyes look large&prominent on stage/in photos:
Eyeshadow technique called "cut crease",where the socket line is raised slightly over my own.
Double false eyelashes on upper lid.First pair slightly outside of eye, following winged eyeliner.I use Ardell´s wispies or Demi Wispies,or Model21´s style nr.X-11.(They are very affordable,10 pairs cost 11.95$)
Lower false lashes placed slightly outside of lower lashes.(I use many different brands but Diamond Lashes are my fave.
Circle lenses(my sister is an optician, and I recommend of course to check eye health regularly)
Remember that many,many beauty schools that educate MU-artists are severly lacking in teaching how to do makeup on asian eyes;
I remember being shown *one*way of doing *one* "asian shaped"eye pair which were ridiculous...as if a filipinas eyes were the same shape as a thai womans,or korean,or malaysian etc etc
One of the best lash curlers IMO is Koji´s Accent curler,it creates a stable "shelf"for false lashes to sit upon(my own lashes grows downwards)and is great for everyday makeup as I can curl just the outer half of my upper lashes, and curl lower lashes very easy:)

Before and after pics! Pretty please? I can't envision the lash placement.

OK,I said no diagrams
...but searching through my bookmarks I remembered one of my favorite bloggers Olivias diagrams for different eyeshapes:
Into The Palette
The emphasis of a (fake) socket line looks great both on monolids and double lids, and IMO it directs the audience attention powerfully, because they can easily follow the dancers eye direction.
I found a video blogger named Suzi´s that has great "walk-through"and close view of my own favorite tricks(crease, false lash, extending eye both outwards and inwards):

Re: Tips/pictures for Monolid/Asian eye makeup?
I loved both blog link and video
. I can't wait to try these methods out some day when I have nothing going on. A few of my belly dance friends and I were going to do a fake photo shoot and take pictures of eachother, trying out poses and stuff, and trying out make up would be a good idea too.

Re: Tips/pictures for Monolid/Asian eye makeup?
Off topic, but just wanted to second this idea of having a 'fake' photoshoot as practice. I recently did this with a friend who is a hobby photographer, and I am so glad. It's work, and it takes a lot of practice to feel comfortable in front of the camera, figure out poses, etc.! Identifying and dealing with problems beforehand is great, instead of taking the time out of a "real" photoshoot.
I'm a bit of a geek so I like to time the segments as well, so I know how long I need for make-up, hair, costume changes, etc.... ;)
And of course, learning and practicing new make-up or hair techniques *before* performance day is great. I know some people avoid stage make-up at all costs until stage day, but I'd rather make mistakes when I'm not already nervous and stressed. Taking a quick picture of yourself after each practice can give you a more candid look at what works from a few feet away, as well.
Thanks for letting me interrupt
