Question ?_? Crochet Costumes Pieces ?_?

I fell in love with this jacket, but alas it was sold before I could even ask about it... ( http://www.bhuz.com/bellydance-swap-...tems-sale.html) Does any one know how to make these costumes or know of a book/ website that could teach me?

It reminded me of Princess Farhana's Vintage Bra PRINCESS FARHANA: RAQQIN' THE RETRO: VINTAGE BELLY DANCE COSTUME CARE AND REPAIR

:: Sigh :: A girl can dream, no?

Those girls who bought those beaded boleros got a STEAL! This is Shadiah's description of these items on her original FB post:

Way back when - I was dancing in Washigton, DC at the Astor - a Greek club - I worked with Bella Stella - a Greek belly dancer who made these "jackets" out of bugle beads - fantastic! I asked her if she would teach me how to make these - she said N0 - but shed sell one to me ! Lololol..I thought I could figure out how to make them - I bought 2 - one in Turquoise and one in Black and Silver - I paid $600 EACH for them ! Thats like $2,000 today ! But - how beautiful - and I could not figure out how to make these even tho I took them to every expert knitter I knew ! They all said she had a "pattern" - when she came to work w me here in Detroit - I aksed her if she would show me how to do repairs on them - she said - No ! But she would repair them for a price .....lolololo....so I had her repair them ! They hook under your costume bra - Ill see if I can get a model to wear one - Perfect condition - $75

To this day, Shadiah is bugged about this. She does beautiful beadwork herself but she couldn't figure out how to do this.

Does anyone know what happened to Bella Stella?

It would be great to find out where she is...

I did a google search for methods last night, and I didn't really find anything... the closest looking things were Covers on Xmas Ornaments... and these fun beaded snakes!

    ...The search continues...

I'm not suprised they are expensive - that looks like a lot of work and materials. Very gorgeous!

Norma, can you post a close up of the connections between the beads? Are there threads down the outside of the length of each bead, or is all the connecting thread running down the inside? Are there knots or connecting loops at the junctions between beads? And any clues to the overall construction e.g. places where there is a "seam"?

I'll ask Shadiah to take some close up pictures before she packs it up and ships it off.

At first I thought it was crocheted, but now I am thinking that mesh pieces were made and then connected together. And NOW I am thinking I want to make a skirt like that...

I was wondering if it might be a type of needle-weaving.... And I think you should make me a skirt like that.

Hehe, so, if I take detailed pictures of the piece to share once it arrives here, do I get first in line for ordering a matching skirt? Seriously, I feel that the universe was unreasonably kind to me when I was the first person to express interest in this fabulous piece, I'll be be delighted to take photos and post here.

Is it possible that this is a variation on the technique used to create those crochet dance dresses? I thought Solomon's Knot was how they made those Sharifwear sequined shawls, but I don't know if the dresses are a finer version of the same, a variation on a hex/honeycomb stitch, or something else.

Solomon's Knot was what I was thinking, too... I just can't imagine how much time that would take using the beads!

I can't offer any help regarding the request in the original post.

However, for the more general question of crocheting items for belly dancing:

Meira's web site has a few crochet instructions: Fiber Gallery

My web site has instructions for crocheted zill mufflers: Belly Dance: Crocheted Zill Mufflers

Skirt?! I'd want one too please! :D

So is this kind of what you wanted to do? Pardon the photo post to this dancer, I have NO CLUE who it dancer is! None of the girls in central PA know who it is either :/ When I emailed the "Khaleeji Student Association at Penn State" they never wrote back. All I know is that she was Russian?

Also I feel like those jackets had LESS emphases on crochet than beads, and this skirt has more emphases on crochet than beads. Maybe?

I have a skirt exactly like the one in the photo expect mine is emerald green. I used to own one in silver. The crochet work is done with sequins, not beads. The skirts were made in Turkey.

Shadiah was never able to figure out how that beading on that jacket was done, and she is a master beader. She was able to achieve something similar on one of my costumes but she couldn't imagine doing and entire costume that way.

Wow. Strips linked with the latticed bugle beads? Just gorgeous though, and definitely not something to contemplate with those evil beads that cut the thread.

One of my very favorite costumes. The beading has held up very well. Shadiah uses button/carpet thread.
