Storage for costume creation/repair/maintenance sewing stuff?

I've seen posts on storing costumes, but I need some suggestions for drawers to store all the sewing notions and stuff you keep handy for making, repairing, and maintaining costumes. I found a small cabinet at Hancock Fabrics today but I can't find it on their web site to show you. It was called Hancock Essentials 5-drawer storage cabinet, for $79.99. But if you guys have other recommendations I'd appreciate them.

I wish I were that organized. I have a 32 gallon Rubbermaid tub with all my costume making stuff in is and an old picnic hamper filled with patterns. Now, with in said tub are various containers which have different things in them. For example, I have a cookie tin filled with film canisters that have beads in them. I glue a bead on the lid in order to keep track of what is in each canister. I have found this to be the easiest way for me to deal with my stash.

I need to do some further organizing so I'll stay tuned to this thread.

I have one storage item that's perfect for thread, needles, pins and sewing notions. It's a box that was made for fly-tying. For those of you who don't fish, fly-tying is making your own artificial fly's to fish with. It's got lots of very small compartments in multiple layers and perfect for thread, bobbins, needles, you name it.

I currently sew on the kitchen table. I keep my stuff in a mary kay consultant rolling tote made to organize makeup samples, so I can just roll the whole thing into the kitchen when I need it. Like this one, but the one pictured seems to be missing some dividers: Mary Kay Rolling Travel Tote (Suitcase) | eBay

In the tool box aisle at Home Depot, I found a plastic box that actually looks like a smallish suitcase - it has a handle and the lid is clear plastic. Within there are about 10 separate compartments that can be taken out if needed.
    Ooh - found a link:

Anyhoo - it's lightweight and easily portable, and I actually use mine for makeup.

I use something similar to this for my notions and patterns:

The one I have came from Target in packages of 2 and I bought two sets and snapped them all together to make 4. I can't tell how big the one is in the picture, but mine is a little smaller than a medium flat-rate box, but definitely bigger than a 8.5 X 11 piece of paper.

My current sewing projects each get their own individual box. I like the kind that have lids that are attached because they are easier to keep track of (like a filing box). I've also found that the filing boxes are a good size and easy to store.

I use a tackle box. I'm actually putting together a website with info on costuming. Scroll down on this page to see my write up about using a tackle box for notions.

I've PM'd you an article on what you need in a workbox, that I did for a Costume Seminar. It's too long to post, really.
I wouldn't recommend keeping stuff in anything with drawers, open shelves are better. You need to be able to see what you want right away. Your notions and supplies have a habit of outgrowing anything you put them in anyway! Good luck!

Re: Storage for costume creation/repair/maintenance sewing stuff?

The main issue I have with tackle boxes, etc is that i have cats. Cats who get upset with me when there are things where they want to lay down. And those things get pushed off of the tables, etc. Was not good for the iBook, and unless the areas within the tackle box are solid and can take a shaking without the possibility of co-mingling, probably not the best solution, at least for beads and other small things such as findings.

That having been said, I could see using one for other things which aren't as easily mixed up.

Re: Storage for costume creation/repair/maintenance sewing stuff?

I use an Ikea bookshelf, I forget the name, but it's the one with 20 square shelves. I got some baskets at the dollar store and they fit 3-4 per shelf. Each project gets its own basket.

I agree that open shelves are easier. When you can see what you have on hand with a quick scan of the shelves, it makes finding thing a lot easier.
