Sewing machine question
Last weekend, I acquired a beautiful vintage sewing machine, a Singer 15-90, at a yard sale, for $25! It seems in fine shape, the engine runs, the box is just a bit banged up. It came with a manual (yeay!), but none of the other accessories. If I want to get extra doodads, like a rolled hem foot, is there a standard size (low shank?) for this type of machine, or do I have to be ready to hunt on Ebay? Also, should I stock up on belts?
Here is a link to pictures of that kind of machine: Singer 15, 15-88, 15-89, 15-90 Black Edition Sewing Machine

Re: Sewing machine question
Parts for 15 class machines are very easy to find - they made 14.9737 kazillion of them. I'm not sure if its low, high, or extra high shank, although I'd guess low.
The one you linked to is an excellent example of "clueless overpricing" often seen in the vintage sewing machine market. The price you paid was market correct.
It never hurts to stock an extra belt, although they "usually" last for years. Just about any sewing notions place (Beverly's, Jo-Ann's, et al) should have them.
15s are good machines - enjoy!"The Veiled Male"

Re: Sewing machine question
Haha, yeah, I didn't take the pricing on the link serious ;-) The seller said she paid $100 and used it a few times, so I assume I got a good price (also given that non cabinet mounted sewing machines are rare around here), but it's not an Antiques Roadshow find ;-) Hm, that sure would have been fun, though!
And, thanks for the insights.

Re: Sewing machine question
My first sewing machine was a similar model from Leeuwenstein. I got it as a birthday gift in 1992 and used it for five years. It went into the closet at the time because the electric engine broke down, but my dad recently fixed the engine and is using it again. Don't worry about the belt: keep it well lubed and it will last for years. As for spare parts, you can stock up but it's hard to say what you might need in the future. The easiest way to make sure you have enough spare parts is to buy a second machine.
