Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
I had to put my blue costume on hold because I can't find the beads I want. But! Today I came home with a lovely (and slightly weird) piece of satin. Unfortunately, it's only 90x130ish cm, so I've been racking my brain all evening trying to figure out how to get a skirt out of it that isn't etirely straight or a mermaid. I'd perfer to make something along the lines of this shape: Belly Dance Costumes | Belly Dance Store.com: gallery, but alas. Unless I add a panel of a different cloth and/or a whole lot of seams, that doesn't seem very achievable (what IS that, anyway? It's too tight around her hips to be a circle, plus there are no diagonal seams.). I'll conquer this cloth somehow, just you wait.

I have to cover a bra and belt and attach a costless coin set for a performance on June 12. Probably won't get started until this weekend though

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
I finished a circle skirt, sleeve, and headband set I had been working on in time for the New York Dance Parade May 21st, which would be impressive if I hadn't started the project with the intention of finishing it in time for last year's dance parade! This is the first circle skirt I've made, and I admit that sewing 9 yards of hem did not play to my strengths.
I bought the satiny, butterfly-print fabric on sale at Joann Fabrics, so the whole set cost, I think, less than $30.

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
I'm not sure I'm in love with the split-sleeve look, so sometime this month I'm going to try to make an alternate set of closed puff sleeves out of what's left of the fabric.

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
So I definitely have not been on here in some time so here are the updates. I finished my bling costume in time for my gig about a month ago. Here is the update pic of the belt. and a full bod shot.

Yesterday I finished making the bra for the zebra costume I got. The original was tiny and super home made but since the costume came with extra fabric I made a new costume bra as well as wristlets. I love it now :)

heres a body pic when I couldnt resist at work. Unfortunately the lighting doesn't let the blinginess and sparkle show :( Hopefully Ill get some pro photos in this soon!

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
Fabulous work Jennifer. Both costumes look great on you.
It's ironic that you posted the Zebra one. I've been toying with the idea of making myself a zebra costume. I made one a few years ago for someone else. There was a really pretty zebra costume made by Yasser that sold a couple of times here on Bhuz that I've never been able to get out of my head. Maybe it's time I put needle to fabric and make my own version.
Right now I'm working on a dark royal blue velvet with silver beading. Perhaps I can get some pics up this weekend.

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
I got to work on a make-over project a few weeks ago. Here's the before from last September when I picked it up in America:

I am balancing a box of peeps from California Tanya on the overpowering bra.
Here I am so far, the belt still needs some wiring and I need to take the damaged gauntlets and make wrist and arm bands of them.

And the gallery of work.

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
Tempest did a very adorable zebra- I always thought animal prints so over the top- but I really liked her's....
well my projects got derailed for actual paid work- I did two costless type medallion/coin sets sewn to bra's and belts. Man those things are a crap ton of work- something like 10-15 hrs to do a good job from bra covering to last stitch and that was w/o a liner for the bra. They looked great for the performance- well sort of- one got left at home- i was super angry at myself and my friend took her bike and rode something like 120 miles to try to rescue it for me before they went on stage- we wound up jury rigging something but I was super pissed I did all that work and left it at home. They are using them again this weekend I believe- very cool costumes if I say so myself.
And I was also comissioned to do 6 monsterloon pants- fabric was a pretty burgendy paisely- very rich and lovely. They came out okay- just took FOREVER.
That was the first time I had worked on any pants for anyone besides myself- it was a bit of a challenge- but I muddled through and they are performing this weekend with the pants so hopefully I'll get video or pictures- I was proud I got them done.
I didn't get anything done really for myself.... so this past week- I finished sewing the adornment on my straight skirt- I'm very happy with the results- the bra is lacking something but I need it to be done for tonight- so I'm going to just run with it for the time being and I'll post a picture up tonight or tomorrow and we can vote.
Second straight skirt is cut and not quiet half done- need to do side attachement and elastic- trim and hem.
I have 2 circle skirts that need work- I managed to get one cut out- and its hanging in the shower- hoping to bang out both of those this weekend and clear the fabric stash.
I started my doodle pad (thanks Shushanna- that is flipping genius!!!) and wasn't really thrilled so back on Fire Mountain Gem's for some crystals and some bugel beads- I'm really looking forward to getting the Great Loops project finished for a gig next month.
yeha- and I have no pictures- I'll update later- I keep promising myself I'll get them on here- but I just haven't- I've been kinda busy- but I will at some point! LOL

All dance sewing has been put aside for Pennsic sewing (some of which is still sorta dance sewing though). Planning to make a white linen galabeya with historic Egyptian cross-stitch and embroidery on it. Let's see if I have time to actually produce this item before August ;-)

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
I'm still working on my gold bedlah. The bra and front of the belt were done in May.

And now I'm working on the back of the belt.

It will be symmetrical, so what's going on on the left will be added to the right. The long haul will be the fringe on the belt.

It is spectacular Shushanna... What colour of the skirt do you plan to wear with this bedlah?

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
Thank you! It's a one-sided fabric, which makes sleeve drapes challenging. I have a similar fabric that I'm trying to make sleeve drapes out of by sewing two pieces of it together. It's getting the edges to look even that I find difficult. If I can make that work, I'd try it with this fabric, too. I have enough left over to experiment with a few sleeve options.

Here's a couple of pics of the beginnings of my Saphire costume. The bra is half beaded, the skirt/cuffs/headband are done, the belt is covered in fabric and awaiting the motherload of silver beads that need to go on it.

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
I finally found my camera cord, hooray! I have a few things I'm working on (and will probably continue to work on).
The first is my newest purchase: The navy bedlah. It's so shiny! I had to add some length to the belt and bra, replace a rhinestone, and now I have to adjust the halter strap. Plus, I'm finishing up a navy skirt to go with it. :)
I'm also working on a pink and black costume. Something really simple, and almost plain, but I have this vision in my head. I'm afraid the actual product won't be quite what's rolling around in the brain-pan, but I hope I can get close. The skirt is going to end up being split on both sides... still working out the logistics on that.
But, here they are:Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars. Or the unimaginable hideous gaping void of space. One of the two.

Great work so far, ladies! I'm still working on the pink and brown. Progress has slowed because I threw my neck out...But here is what I got done before that.

Re: What are you working on in June 2011???
Excellent work, ladies. Ree, this draping fluid goes on my list of to-buy stuff!
I've finished my red, gold and black belt. It was a project intended to be short, sweet and using up things had on hand. (Pics are not working for me right now, but you can view it here: Black, Red & Gold | Facebook )
I've also made pantaloons from fabric I hand on hand, trying to thin out my fabric stash and tried my hand at a Tempest belt (will have t mdify the pattern for my short-waisted self though): Random Costuming Projects | Facebook
I have several projects in mind fr the summer, not sure which I will tackle next month. I have three circle skirts t hem, 2 headdresses to make, I still have to make a belt for my tribaret (and find a way to reduce the cup size...on a finished bra... wah! :) ), and I really do need an actual tribal bra. BUT... I got really inspired to do this icy lavender costume. We'll see what happens...
