Lessons from my photos from Cairo Caravan

Just saw photos from my performance at Cairo Caravan. Here are a few things I have learned. . .

1 - get rid of the silver eye shadow. It doesn't read under stage lights.

2 - My hair is a lot more red than I thought it was.

3 - I need to stop being afraid of eye shadow, liner and eye brow pencil. Not to mention blusher.

4 - Until I get those things down, Stay away from the red lip stick! Dusty rose, mauve or even a muted wine. Fire engine, not so much!

5 - Remember the eyelashes for stage!!!!

6 - While we are a very forgiving art, it's time to release the 30 lbs which came to live with me 8 years ago. I not only look better - in my opinion - but I feel better.

Okay, as this isn't a pity party, what have you discovered and made changes about when you got visible feedback from one of your performances?

ETA: Here is a photo. And yes, Ezma, that is the fuzzy bedlah!

oh that bedlah is awesome, and you look lovely. I am having way more fun dancing than just a few years ago…I'm not sweating the small stuff anymore. Life is too short!

But I will say eyebrows darkened is a must!

    I love that bedlah, too!

As for me, at my last performance, I wore two costumes: the first one was a silver bra and belt with an ice blue skirt, the second was a coppery-creamy color combo. What I so dislike in my pictures is that my makeup colors went with the first costume but not at all with the second one, and of course most of the pictures we took were with the second one.

What I learned: either adjust the makeup between numbers or just keep the same costume on...

You and I have a similar skin complexion.

I too am afraid of eyeliners and shadows... what helped me get over some of that is to practice with my makeup on occasion. I watched tutorials on youtube and played around with them to see what look was best for me. I still don't gob it on like I should for big stage shows, but it still looks good and I feel comfortable. I've found that brown eyeliners and mascaras look much better on me (strawberry blonde) than black ones which make me look like a hooker lol.

One thing that I've learned I really need to do for the stage (and you might look into this too) is to lightly color in my eyebrows. A way that I've tried that works is to take a brown, non-liquid eyeliner, outline the inside, top, and bottom of my eyebrows then fill in the eyebrow by smudging the outline. Doing this really makes my eyes and face pop on stage and in videos/pics.

Dito on the lipstick. I did the bright red thing and it looked horrible on me! Dark rose/mauve type colors look really nice and a bit more natural but still enough have enough "pop".

I also found that colored eyeshadows (especially blue and green) look really bad on me... looks like I've got a black eye or am sick or something. A mix of coppers and roses look really nice.

I could also stand to lose 30lbs!

yeah for stage photos!! a slight more amount of "French Whore " makeup is good for stage---i didn't do lashes either cause it was bright daytime, but then i used a ton of mascara. I agree w/ the enhanced eyebrows for stage. Makeup---it's all trial and error and sometimes you look great in photos and sometimes you don't.

here's a link to my peformance youtube----i edited the beginning cause i didn't like my entrance!!!!---
My lessons---1) better arm poses 2)pull in the abds more when working that area 3) work on chasses more in the entrance( i changed to bare feet and it didn't quite work)---you can see the effect in the exit---must practice more w/ toe leading in whatever shoes or bare feet i wear.

there's always more stuff to work on!!

You know what, Tahira? I think your liner looks good, your eyes look sparkly and bright. Lashes are always wonderful, and more color on your lids and cheeks would be great, but I think what you're really feeling the lack of in this photo is eyebrow color!

I'm very aware of it, it's the thing I've learned from my own photos. I have light brown brows and for stage lights, I HAVE to darken them to balance out the rest of my makeup.

Thanks everyone for both your sharing your own experiences and your feedback. Believe it or not, I did darken my eyebrows! Obviously not enough!

And Taji, thanks for the complement on my arms. If I brought nothing else from 20 + years of ballet, modern and jazz, it's good arms!

Maybe time to book a session with Devilla. And get out my Theatrical make up kit. The main value is that is the custom face drawing which was done of me many years ago. It's great because I can doodle on it with colour and get an idea of what will work!

I suffer from deplorably understated brows, so I feel your pain... but I can read your joy without the brow pencil. A single snapshot is not always the kindest(Or contrary to belief, the truest) representation of how we look. I love the costume, and you seem so lighthearted! I love it.

What a great shot- I love the energy you have under the veil!!!

I found being able to be comfortable in lots of make up is a practiced thing... the first time I layed on the heavy shadow/eyeliner I freaked and went OMGNEVER... but I gradually started playing more and more just for fun at home alone- watching videos and what not... and became more accustomed to seeing my face with the make up and now full make up is no big deal and the only difference between my night out make up and my "stage" make up is the fact that I make sure I go with a full face primer- and a foundation.

And I go with a double wammy of blush up high contoured with bronze just under the bone- so it makes it look more sculpted and higher and leaner.

I think thats my really big upgrade is giving myself sky high cheek bones. :D

must practice more w/ toe leading in whatever shoes or bare feet i wear.
I remember doing my first intensive- or maybe just my L1... and we spent almost a good 30 minutes doing foot to floor association drills with Suhaila. wow- I was suprised at what a difference it makes not just in the look- but it makes me FEEL more like a dancer- and improves my posture and the whole energy in how I move. I still practice this on a daily/weekly basis... I think its a massively overlooked issue. And coming from a massively NONE dancer background- I really still need improvement!

My biggest pet peeves right now are being able to follow traditional music well all the way through- committing to the song and the movement.

Keeping the abs engaged- big bootay basha likes to let the bum loose and bounce (try that for allteriation) apparently.

And I have a left hand flopping issue that horribly annoying. its come a long way- but 203985r4lasdjflasjkd is it annoying!

OT and not a makeup issue, but Tahira! I have a circle skirt to sell in the exact same fabric as that veil! Want it? I think they should get together and live happily ever after. :)

LOL! Let me think about it. The veil was Jasmins and came with a teal vest and 3 panel skirt. The vest has matching sleeves, so maybe. . .

I chose the veil because the silver and gold combo, while lovely, needed something fun!
