Thread: How to clean sweat stains out of costumes?

I have a favorite costume that I wear heavily for shows, and I've noticed some sweat stains in the bra (yuck) and was wondering what would be the best way to clean it?

I would remove the lining, place the lining inside a sock and run it through a wash cycle. Then reline the bra using the same fabric. If you prefer not to wash and reuse the lining then use it for a pattern for a replacement lining.

If the stains are in the lining, replace it. If you are feeling so moved, this would also be a good time to wash the bra.

Hmm Im not a good seamstress :( I can sew hems, but not much more than that. I'm afraid ill ruin something by removing the lining

Lining is really easy to replace. It's just whip stitched in. If you can sew a button, you can do this!

If you aren't going to replace the lining, then washing is the way to go!

I've washed costumes by soaking them in a bath of soapy water, no scrubbing, but gentle swishing. Then LOTS of rinsing with clean water. Again, gently agitating, but no wringing out.

I've had some colour leaching out from sequins, but thankfully so far, not to the detriment of the overall look of the costume.

hmm i'm going to take a look at the lining when i get home from work and see if i can remove it easily. if not, i might try the soaking method. i'm so nervous i have a tendency to ruin things
