    Adventures in hatmaking,calling millinering Bhuzzers

    Here I go again
As soon as I sold all the costume projects I realized I need a new persian costume...and with the silk road styles you NEED hats(pillbox,Juliet caps, teardrop hats etc)

So I´ve ordered a hat base and will do my best not to ruin it-I´m such a sewing clutz!

Has anyone here ever made their own hats or fascinators?

I adore hat making! Do you have basic instructions already? is it a buckram frame?

I've got books & notes from my theater costuming days, but there is a TON of information and links over at Hats by Leko, Wholesale Millinery Supplies, importer/exporter (tho you have to troll through all the various product pages to find some of the video links- that's just because they relate specifically to the items on that page.)

I like going to vintage clothing places for finds to rework.

I´ll soon have a buchram frame(from an Etsy hatmaker who also sold supplies!),fabric(for costume and hatcovering)and great decorations:a vintage shalwar kameez set too small for me that I´ve scavenged beautiful appliques from!Motifs are different variations of paisleys

(Just tried to upload some pics-appearently need some tech help to do it right, but will update with pics of progress!)

I made a hat to go with my Big Pink Fouffe costume. This was an homage to Fifi's pink costume in her Ismailia/Cherrypicker show.

Oh that´s my FAVORITE Fifi-show(and costumes...love your hat-it´s super charming!

And Lauren Victoria Gray chimed in to costume discussion in the "persian dance"group on FB,so thaks to Lara´s links and Laurel´s "online support " I hope to make something at least decent:P

*mutters*wonder if I´m doing this right now...here´s some "Frankenstein"parts, some of the chiffon veils smaller paisleys will be strenghtened with wire and thicker fabric to be made into smaller hat decorations...

Here´s what the frame I purchased look like:

Re: Adventures in hatmaking, calling millinering Bhuzzers

    Hi!

I once made one when I had only very limited time as I wanted to wear my costume for the carnival-dressing-up-day at our school (I'm a teacher in a primary school). Unfortunately, I only have one not so good picture of it. Forgive the lack of makeup also, please. I had normal school-lessons afterwards and that would have looked weird,then...

I made it of a plastic-bowl (I've had nothing else at this moment and needed something for a hat-base urgently) which I cutted so that it was not so high and covered it with raw silk which I stapeled on it on the edge from inside. Then, I've sewn some rhinestone-brooches on it and some chains of real pearls as well as a rhinestone-armband. In front of it is an applique which I've sewn on, as well - and finally a fluffy purple feather. That's it. Was simple to make.
Oh - and I added a gorgeous Akai-veil to it which I've fixed with two brooches so that I can use it, again if I want.

    Love, Sahira.

LOL for using a plastic bowl, Sahira!

I once made a hat with a Camembert box as a base!

Haha - I wanted to use one of those, first but had no Camembert (including it's box) at home...

    Love, Sahira.

I would check out SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism - i.e., historical reenactment) sources, too - it is quite common for those with a Persian persona to make hats, and SCAdians are typically very generous with sharing their knowledge.

    Quick googling brought up this:

This is FABULOUS! I hope mine comes out as good!(may I say I´m green with envy over your entire costume closet?)

Yes!(THANK YOU!)I´ve found resources for ideas about layers, fabric patterns and other ideas through SCA;however our groups persian(and other silk road costumes) aims for the later Qajar era in styling-but I found a great site for inspiration HERE:Women's Worlds in Qajar Iran | Home

I´m attaching a charming painting from Olga Davidson´s collection,a dancer doing a hand stand!
