Thread: Where to find skirts with oomph?

Where do you find your pretty skirts? I know where to find lots of pretty but plain ones. So now I'm wondering about finding fancier ones.

custom made is the way to go - find a good seamstress and bring her your ideas.

Pharaonics of Egypt makes many styles of fancy skirts that come with matching veils and sleeves or gauntlets of some kind. Dahlal and bellydancestore generally stock a good selection of these.

Unfortunately for some of us, off-the-rack skirt shopping is an unreachable dream. It works well only for those between ~ 5'5" - 5'8" or so. If you are taller than that the pickings are slim (or nonexistant in the case of one of my troupemates who is over 6'), and if you are shorter than that you are left with having to shorten everything (and sometimes sacrificing fancy beaded/sequined/wired edges or the overall cut of the skirt).

Also, if you have significant junk in the trunk, or body shape requires to you position the skirt waistband at an angle rather than parallel to the ground, skirts off the rack may not hang right.

After years of trying to either roll the waistband of skirts that were too long, or shortening them properly from the bottom and throwning away half of the "oomph" I paid dearly for, I now not only make most of my own skirts, but also recently decided to make custom skirts. I'm a stickler for those details.

I would, however, love to have one of those vintage style chiffon petal skirts with the paillettes all over (but without the flower designs that are generally all over them as well) -- Like Ansuya wears . Or one of those beaded lace mermaid type skirts (there have been a couple for sale recently but were snapped up fast). Anyone know sources for either of these?

horus and isis have the vintage style lace mermaid skirts... they actually have a lot of skirts with the vintage-y feel. they can even make you the overskirt without the flowers if you want..... minimum order is 200, though...

I second the Pharonix skirts. I am a skirt junkie as well :) I have more skirts than I will probably ever be able to wear. I like options :)

The Pharnix skirts are so fabulous and well made. The Arabesque skirts are really really full and lovely when you spin :) I currently own over a dozen of them and love to layer them for an even fuller effect :)
