Ideas for a "light up" sword?

I want to make my sword look lit up (temporarily). I found magnetic LED lights, but they're made to sandwich fabric between the light and a magnetic backing, and I don't think the backing is strong enough to hold them through metal. Any ideas?

Is your sword magnetic? Will a magnet stick to it?

Yes, but not strong... A refrigerator magnet will stick to it, but will fall off if I shake it enough... I might be better off sticking lights on it with that stuff you use to put posters on a wall that with a magnet?

It's worth checking just make sure and give it a good testing. How well that stuff sticks can depend on the surface.

I have used those Think Geek LED lights before, they're really light weight (we used to chuck them at our friend's windows and let them stay there.

Do you want "stands" of light instead (at the hilt?)? Try Glowbys, they look really nice (wore them in my hair for some Bellydance event/ mini-raves at other cons)
Amazon.com: Glowbys LED Fiber Optic Light-Up Hair Barrette - Rainbow: Toys & Games

For something messy but "smear-able"... they sell ULTRA BRIGHT (non-toxic) glow in the dark hair/body gel now. Not like the dim paint where you need light, but it actually has a chemical reaction to keep it super bright. But that might not be as fun for clean up >_<

I love the idea of light up digital graffiti! I want to graffiti someone's car! But I'm going for a "light saber" look and need a solid color for the sword. Those glowbys might work, and the paint, too! Thank you, both better ideas than the LED lights.

Are you doing a star wars themed belly dance ;)

I remember what the specific product is called now "iglow"

iGlow Gels for Cool, Night-time Party Fun- Creates Its Own Light, Without Black Lights

This site (and tons of others) sell it. It's FDA approved and wasn't tested on animals :D i've seen it before, it's SUPER bright after a few seconds of mixing and lasts quite a few hours... It came off my friends hair easily with just some shampoo (twice)

Yes, I am, for a themed event, and I'm having fun with it so far. Thank you for the link! I just ordered some! My next puzzle is how to not look like I'm wearing rubber chickens in the cheesy Princess Leia costume I ordered (the parts that are supposed to appear to be metal are brown rubber blobs), but I think I can manage the costume upgrading :D.

That sounds like so much fun! Is the gig for a convention or private function?

I know this lovely lady is on youtube and she does Leia the act well:
    LeiaLive

I've belly danced as Leia before at a con, but I modified the costumes (simple nude elastic band) to keep her panels connected lower down the thigh. I wanted it more "closed" since I spin a lot when I dance. I actually balanced a toy replica light saber (cheap ones you get at sporting events) but that was because it was mobile and I had to walk around the con a lot between events. I think the GP will be fine with the "rubber" costume- they'll love you for the novelty of it anyways. I just warn you, my sister bought one of those and it ripped easily. You might need to hot glue it to some felt to reinforce it. I own a Wire/Femo/metal version of her costume, and it does much better! (Even though I need a new smaller bra)

Tell me how everything goes! Or post any more questions, I might be able to help? ^_^

My friends and I did a Mario belly dance at Rak Spring Caravan, and the next con I'm doing is all "Internet Meme's"- like the Hampster Dance or Lol Cats. I've done many interesting requests/ideas from Monty Python, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Legend Of Zelda, Anime School Girls, Final Fantasy Video Game Characters, Etc.

Thanks! Fun clips!!! It's a private function, and outside of my normal "box" for sure, but I'm expecting it to be fun! I definitely plan to tack the "rubber chicken" top onto a real base, I'd be scared to move in it as is. Have you seen the costumes from Organic Armor? If I were going to be Princess Leia regularly and could justify the expense, I'd order a costume from them, they look spectacular: Custom Belly Dance Set Bra Belt and Cuffs Autumn by organicarmor

I love those costumes! I would love one of their's, they look so elegant and fierce at the same time! Almost Lord of The Rings Feel.

Also as an FYI if you replace the cloth of the bra with a different color, it's not a big deal-This website offers different color combos, just click on the photo on the right side- The Replica Slave Bikini by LeiasMetalBikini.com
