Thread: Help finding royal blue sari satin fabric? Been looking for 2 years now...

I am hoping someone on here might be able to help me find some fabric I've been looking for for about 2 years now. let me explain:

I do medieval reenactment. In 2009 I went to a big event and a friend took a photo of me in one of my gowns. This was the photo:



Now my friend is a creative type and decided he wanted to see what the dress looked like in blue so he edited the photo and came up with this:



I *LOVE* how the blue looks & have been looking for some fabric since then. Now I've lost about 40lbs since that photo was taken and I need some new dresses but I still haven't found the fabric. :(

Joanns at one point was carrying sari fabric but i was never able to find it in royal blue & now I'm told they have discontinued it. I found a photo of one of their fabrics that would work great, unfortunately all I have is the photo and not the SKU number:



I have been told since it's discontinued it would probably be in the red tag area but have been to all the Joanns around me with no luck not to mention sent all my online friends to their local Joanns looking as well. I've also looked all on ebay as well as been to all the sari stores around here.

The next problem I have is I need *10 uesable yards* of the fabric. That means 10 yards of the same pattern & not the extra full coverage of patterns usually at the end of real saris. So I need 2-3 saris of the same color & pattern to make this gown happen if I can't find flat out fabric.

So... help? :D

I saw that you are in Dallas. I'm in Greenville. There is a new Joann's opening in Rockwall really soon. Maybe surrounding stores will send some fabric there? It's a long shot, I know, but I will keep my eyes open for you. That blue would look great on you!

Thank you for the offer to help but unfortunately the blue sari fabrics have been discontinued (I'm told) so I don't think a new store would get any in. They only carry the asian brocades now which are too stiff for my purposes. You never know though!

I'm hoping that maybe someone who reads this will know of a sari fabric supplier that can help. :D

I do have a yard of royal blue that looks just like the pattern of your red dress (not like the 3rd pic of the blue fabric), but it wouldn't be nearly enough for you.

There is still a ton of it in other colors at my Joanns... I hope they aren't discontinuing the entire line. I made all sorts of neat skirts and things out of that fabric.

I lost the link but I recall EmmaBessa posted something about a sari source. The post was regarding saris for window treatments but they might have something that would work for you. (I was thinking about using them to hide an unsightly ceiling. I lost the link, though. Hopefully the info will again surface.)

Yep and I believe I have been to all of them.

As for the rest, thank you for looking. The plain blue won't work for me; I'm really interested in the pattern since I can find solid satin anywhere. I have contacted several merchants via ebay & none can help .

As far as the two recently posted links i think the pattern is a little dense for the look I'm going for but its an option!

If it is any comfort - that satin fabric from JoAnn is a pain to work with, it pulls and unravels quite a bit; for a very fitted garment one probably would want to line it to prevent pulled seams. I made a coat out of the fabric in your picture, and while it looks quite nice, I had a terrible time.

The outer fabric doesn't take the strain; I make an inner shell out of cotton which is where I get the support from. :)
