drool..slobber...love the skirt, love the dancer, love Bono too

anyone out there remember back in the day when this song was popular and we immediately started scanning craigslist for bellydance classes?

Who did the actual music video? I thought it was the dancer The Edge went on to marry, but according to this interview, his wife started with the band after the video, for the tour. 'I've Never Laughed So Hard Since I Moved to Dublin'

yeah I remember seeing the actual video for Mysterious Ways but I was watching some of their live performances and found this one..I was at one of their shows where they had a bellydancer on stage but I don't know if she was the same one..I remember just being in awe

makes ya want to grab a 'vintage' bra and belt set with chiffon skirt doesn't it :)

I haven't seen this vid before, it's terrific. Thanks for posting.

That skirt is magic. And somebody talk to me about that fringe! want... want... want...

BTW, this is the first time I've seen a professional dancer wear a veil. Does anyone do that any more?

Re: drool..slobber...love the skirt, love the dancer, love Bono too

I couldn't find the dancer by googling but I didn't look very hard..been working

Yes I adore the SIMPLE yet effective costuming..layered silk or chiffon skirts, long beads (if you look close they look like neckelmanns beads or xmas beads we use to string around trees)

I bought a face veil a long time ago from we3 but never wore it..my friend dancer told me it looked too much like a horse feeding bag

but..in chiffon so that a smile can be seen I do like that

yup here's praises for REALLY SIMPLE costuming that is affordable..no need for a $800 designer if this one pleases a crowd huh ? (if it's good enough for Bono..just sayin :)

Never seen that before. Pretty cool!

I thought I remembered reading (maybe on Shira's site?) that face veils were in general not a good idea. Can't remember what the reason might be though.

I love simple costumes. Personally, I'm way too short for fringe monsters and super bling. Love her costume. Although that fringe may not work in a small cafe performance. "you'll put somebody's eye out" .

Remember that in 1993, most people made their own costumes. They found elements which were handy and used them. One of my first costumes - which had been a troupe costume for a troupe here in SoCal for several years - is a bra covered with teal satin, sweater trim, and door curtain beads. The belt has that stretch sequins by the yard along with the other elements. Add a lavender circle skirt and you have a very workable costume for not a lot of money.

Generally niqab is something only conservative Muslimahs wear*; it's a modesty garment. So it's cognitively dissonant to have it on a comparatively-scantily-dressed dancer and potentially offensive. The use of "sexy veiling" can get into weird areas. Orientalism, exoticizing, and uh, veil fetishes.

(*I have seen niqab worn more as a cultural thing rather than of Salafi conservatism, but that seems to be geographically specific, it looks different, and it's probably not something someone should emulate anyway in a performance.)

ETA: that being said, I think this is a nifty performance.

I wish I could see the face of the dancer in the original video more clearly....

Alma Sarhan currently resides in Perth and is originally from Ireland - she's danced with U2 for this song, I just don't know if it was the original video, or on tour (more likely I guess, I'm not that good at recalling these things!). Valeskah or any other Perth girls - are you able to shed further light on this?

The Mezdeke dancers were known for dancing with face veil.

They hide their cheeks and chin, then give us a close up of butt cheeks and thong?

lol your comment always reminds me of what i see on the beaches..why are nipples so offensive? (not in dance context) ..covering the nips but leaving the entire mound of flesh visible? (i'm all for topless beaches lol but i dont understand nipple coverage..ok back to Bono
