Starting to appreciate decorated skirts as opposed to belts...
...because I can't keep a darn bedlah belt down ON my hips after some vigorous wiggling. Especially when I do some Turkish hopping around, I feel the belt flying up. Pushing the belt down tightly doesn't do a bit of good when my waist is so much smaller than my arse; it just works its way up after a few minutes of jitterbugging. Not to mention that gap at the top of belts that a lot of us struggle to fix.
I have always preferred the look of bedlahs over a costume with a lycra skirt, but I'm starting to reconsider. Hmmmmm.....

Pinning helps, as does angling the closure so its a bit tighter at the top of the belt with more space at the bottom. Most belts come with the hooks in a straight line but they hardly ever fit well like that. Adding some elastic to the inside of the belt back can also help it have a bit more grip.

Have you tried belts that are sufficiently cupped around the backside? I have seen Pharaonics great loops stay in place on many hourglass figures and curvy butts. Basting in a piece of elastic can help shut down plumber's crack.
I have the opposite problem. I'm cylindrical; belts stay on fine but heavily decorated skirts just want to slide downward.

If a belt is properly designed and fitted AND pinned, it should stay in place. Also, belts should fit snugly. I've done turkish drops, and splits and all sorts of things and never had a problem with a well-designed belt riding up. I do however pin for extra security. I agree with the suggestion of angling the hooks so the top hook is tighter then the bottom hook.

Re: Starting to appreciate decorated skirts as opposed to belts...
I pinned it to my skirt (fluffy chiffon, not form-fitting, tight lycra) and the skirt too loosened and came up. And my budget being what it is, I won't be buying any better quality, better fitting (Pharaonics, etc.) costumes for awhile.
I had forgot about angling the belt closures so didn't do that on this one (I have in the past), but I don't think it's going to change the belt coming up. My waist above the angled part of the belt is still going to be smaller. Though I will modify this belt and make it angled now that you all have reminded me of it!

I do absolutely see your point on this..I'm normally a fan of lots of fringe over circle skirts but the recent Russian designer photos have me buying bras from Victoria secret and creating a belt base from appliques
I did have a sim once the belt was heavily beaded and fringed and attached to the skirt, it was a dream, the weight held everything in place
its this photo ..can't see much I know..

and again using this photo as inspiration, decorated nude bra with rhinestone studded boyshorts (or VS cheekies..they have them in nude) covered with some well placed appliques and jingly duds..
not sure how she did her skirt, hers maybe is attached to the boy shorts? I'm planning on making mine separate so the boyshorts can be washed easily..and then i'll run a silk circle skirt with a line of that clear plastic strapping, close it with a strand of beads or something
