Re: What do you wear under your Assuit dress?

Wanna know what comes between me and my assuit? NOTHING.

LOL, just kidding, I don't even have an assuit. Most people I know wear an underskirt (half slip) and a crop top or sports bra, because decorated ones are more likely to catch, or else a full slip, depending on how sheer the assuit is and how modest they wish to be. I like the idea of a body suit but don't like the skinny legging leg effect. A leotard might work too.

For most audiences: smooth black balconette-style lingerie bra with good coverage and flared dance trousers or a straight skirt.

For especially conservative audiences or a completely folkloric set: slim, stretchy black sleeveless dress, usually ankle-length.

The inside of an assuit dress will snag most fabrics. I've had good luck with either a slick nylon lycra or that slinky lycra/acetate blend that shows up in a lot of travel catalogues.

    I like Z's first option, though. ;)

Re: What do you wear under your Assuit dress?

I have seen dancers wear a bra with good coverage and underwear also with good coverage and a nice hip scarf for modesty. And that's it. For the right audience, it works. If you want more coverage, both the previous posters suggestions work. Well, maybe not the suggestion of commando, but who am I to say?

I dance with a folkloric troupe - we wear pantaloons and a SLEEVELESS crop top (choli for the gals) under our Assuit dresses, with a coin scarf on top. That's our "summer" costume. Our "heavy metal" costume is pantaloons and a choli/crop top with sleeves under, with a huge tassel belt on top, of Assuit *tunics* - and TONS of chunky jewelry, of course!

Both are a bit scratchy in the midriff area...

Re: What do you wear under your Assuit dress?

If you choose to wear just a bra on top, I urge you to wear one that has been covered ALL OVER with a nice fabric and does NOT have hardware that shows. Ie, one that looks like part of the costume, NOT like your underwear.

My favorite thing to wear under assuit for folkloric sets is a black leotard. I use the Sugar Petals type with a mesh midriff. I usually have bare legs, but it would be okay to wear leggings if you prefer.

I've been known to wear my assuit dress to the opera, as an evening gown. When I do that, I wear a slip under it. Although I typically wear a black slip under it, I think a bright color such as red or turquoise could be stunning.

I've also been known to wear a contrasting turquoise unitard under the assuit. It's not a traditional look, but I like the way the turquoise shows through the mesh.

Re: What do you wear under your Assuit dress?

As mentioned above, it totally depends on the audience and why you are wearing an assuit dress.

    1. Conservative: You are wearing the assuit dress because its a dress and your event requires coverage. Yes, full slip. Yes, skinny pants. Yes, straight skirt. No panties showing! The bride's auntie would not like to see your bra. (ITA with Shira that is must be a proper costume bra!)

    2. Modern-Wild: For nightclub shows, I wore a matching costume bra and hot pants. The assuit and all the accessories were turquoise, including the matching belt that was long enough to prevent showing cheek. Cheerleader shorts are a good choice too.

If you don't have a costume bra, a sports bralette over a regular bra can work.

Yes, please post visuals. I have a faux-assuit tunic-like thingy that I haven't the foggiest idea what to do with. It would help to see what's considered appropriate in this day and age.

I don´t have an assuit costume now(sold it to Dani a few years ago),only scarfs and tunics.

The one I sold was an Amira Kattan made red/silver assuit dress that I wore with a shiny silver grey full length slip under to some events, and with the matching bra plus a slip underskirt in red to other events(just like Suzana mentioned it´s important to find something that the assuit fabric doesn´t snag to)

Of COURSE I would wear a costume bra if you could tell the difference through the fabric, but my dress is heavily worked enough that you can't. I assure you it's Egyptian-Grandma-Approved. YMMV.

If you are looking for a less covered look, another possibility might be bathing suits, assuming you can find something that doesn't have visible lingerie hardware like sliders to adjust the straps or a conspicuous back clasp. Generally, swimsuits are more finished looking than lingerie, and it's usually easy to find something in plain black, either separates (e.g., a full-coverage bra with boyshorts) or a one-piece.

Make sure the swimsuit's bra cups are sturdy, though, or add something to stiffen them, or sew in real bra cups. I've looked at swimsuits with an eye towards costume-making before, and found many of them have soft cups (which is undoubtedly more comfortable for swimming, but not going to provide the kind of support you need when say dancing Saidi style ).

Thank you all. Some very good suggestions. It's for a conservative saidi style & I'm thinking I'll go for a slip or maybe the mesh middle bodysuit.

Re: What do you wear under your Assuit dress?

For just "going out" I wear a stretchy black dress beneath my black/silver or my black/gold Assuit dresses. For performing, I opt for either shiny silver or gold metalskin trumpet skirt (or silver or gold metalskin jazzpants) and matching silver or gold bra top - all L. Rose items. Of course I wear my regular "street bra" underneath the metalskin bra top for support and shaping.

The nice thing about this method is that the shiny metalskin, whether gold or silver does "shimmer" a bit underneath the Assuit and it all looks very polished - with midriff area covered only by the dress itself. Don't try this with scratchy Assuit dressses - .

I must admit I am something of an Assuit addict! and all my "costume Assuit dresses" have matching Assuit hip shawls........
