    A really good lip balm?

So it's winter, my lips are terribly dry. I've been using Chapstick for several years but sometimes it seems like I'm sealing the dryness in.

Anyone have a recommendation for something that actually moisturizes your lips, rather than just "protect" them?

I have heard that if a lip balm/gloss has petroleum in it-
your lips will actually dry out more. . .
making you need the product more-
    so I would try a no-petroleum product.
    Good Luck!

You betcha. My lips were horrible when on Accutane and I found relief in Burt's Bees and Aveeno balms.

Burt's Bees is my favorite. Even have some pigmented ones that are like super moist lipstick plus gloss. Enjoying chocolate/mint flavored lip balm at this very moment.

I've tried Chapstick, and just found it to be waxy with no moisturizing action. I've tried Blistex, and it made my lips worse.

I've tried Vaseline, and that's what works for me. As long as I use it regularly (every night at bedtime, sometimes during the day too) it works great for me.

Pussy Pucker Pots are my favorite, they have cute names, come in a wide variety of flavors, and are vegan. Pussy Pucker Pots: 100% Natural, 100% Naughty, 100% Vegan Lip Balm for Ladies!

Thanks for the warning about the Desert Essence Sabrina! I like their toothfloss, but I wont use beeswax.

Chapstick Moisturize and Aveda's Lip Saver

    Yeah!! :o)

Chapstick is the best for really dry lips with little or no fragrence...You can eat and drink, reapply and not taste it!

I like Blixtex medicated lip ointment. It comes in a little tube, and I keep one handy everywhere. They work really great for me.

i used to swear by carmex, but you end up with that cycle where if you stop using it, you need it more...i'm now addicted to smith's minted rosebud salve, which has a nice tint to it...

I will only use Meleah's vita-plus lip treatment. It does wonders for my lips! I actually have had deep cracks in my lips and this stuff heals it quickly. I put moisturizer on my lips and then seal it with the lip balm. Works great! meleah.com is where you can order it from. Also make sure you are getting your Omegas in : )

Burts bees! my lips get really dry, and it works great. It also has a nice cool feel when you put it on. Like Souzan said, they even have some colored balms. They have lots of other really cool products too, like some great lotions. Its pretty easy to find as well. This is kind of wierd but sometimes if i dont have any chapstick with me and my lips are really dry ill even put some lotion on them. Doesnt taste good, but it works until I can get some balm.

I have had success with these when my lips are very chapped -

Palmer's Cocoa Butter stick: Buy Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Swivel Stick Online at drugstore.com

    Kiehl's Lip Balm: Lip Balm #1 | Kiehl's

If they're really bad, I put honey (raw, if you have it) on them before I go to bed.

Re: A really good lip balm?

I second Aveeno balms, I have allergic reactions to almost all the balms on the market. I develop eczema or they worsen the problem. If I don't use something on my lips, I can still develop the eczema on my lips from drying out (never ending battle).
So I have been using aveeno the last few years and no eczema outbreak, so far (till my body decides its allergic to it as well).

When all else fails, I use vitamin E oil on my lips, since I'm allergic to petroleum.

I'm currently using Whole Foods Lip Balm and like it much better than Chapstick. It moisturizes without feeling gunky.

use a really mild face lotion! Lotion is not petroleum based, so it lets your lips soak the moisture in.... chapsticks just put a seal on the outside to hold the moisture in...which doesn't help if there is NO moisture!

    I make my own.

I use palm oil shortening. Buy it at Whole Foods to use for massaging purposes, put some in a small container to carry and it works well. Coconut oil would be good also. Both would be just plain hard vegetable oils without preservatives, though you could melt them and add essential oils to make them smell like something.

Re: A really good lip balm?

My all-time favorite is Prada lip balm. Before you freak out, I got it at Marshall's for like $10 and it's a box that has about 8-10 vials. Each vial lasts a while - they're mini lipbalm tubes that fit really easily in your pocket and are the most moisturizing thing I've ever had. I bought 2 boxes about 2 years ago and have a million open vials, and a few still unopened so you do get a bang for your buck. They've saved my lips so many times...I don't think they make it anymore, but if you run across some BUY IT!! They also made tinted stuff but I couldn't find any

I use Blistex Lip Medex, and I put it on before I go to bed as well as during the day. Although I'd also recommend Burts Bees - I don't use it, but Adishakti's part of Canada is WAY colder than mine! :)

While it's not a lip balm, it's a collagen lip plumper...I swear by Lip Fusion. I use it all day and before bed and my lips are rarely ever dry. When I put it on overnight it is still on in the morning (even if it is on pillow face!). It's not cheap but I am a total lip product addict and now don't use anything else.

Another good lip balm that I LOVE is Rachel Perry's Lip Lovers. You can usually buy at any good natural foods store (local stores or Whole Foods). Or you can shop online for any good natural products at InterNatural, Natural Herbs, Supplements and Vitamins, Natural Products, Unique Gifts

You can find most of the products suggested on this thread on this website...and at VERY good prices!

I'm allergic to nearly every lip product under the sun, but I swear by Neutrogena's lip balm, available at drug stores that carry Neutrogena products. This would the the lip balm in a stick, not the one in the pot (to which I am, sigh, allergic).

Here's another vote for Burt's Bees. Also, any non-petroleum lip balm that contains nice stuff like natural oils (hemp oil is a nice one) should be good. If your lips are chapped and sore, I might recommend one without peppermint in it, because peppermint on sore lips can irritate them further. For undamaged lips, though, I have no problems with it.

Re: A really good lip balm?

I have a collection of lip balms for the winter! I find them in assorted coat pockets over the months. I really like Bigelow's Rose Balm ( you can get it at Bath n Body Works). There's also something called BodyCoffee, which is coffee-flavoured shea butter lip balm ( i get it at whole Foods). I look for lip balms with SPF 15 9 at least) in them. Kiehls makes a good one too. Keep trying the shea-butter ones until you find one ya like!
