Thread: Body Stocking Examples?

I recently moved back to my home town, and started dancing again with the gal who had taught the first belly dance class I ever attended :D Having moved away and done my own thing for a while I amassed a modest costume collection, and now that I'm back, she's still teaching and has quite a group that does local performances. One thing that they've discovered is that a bare belly just won't fly in our small town. People get quite touchy and don't want their kids to see navels (scandalous!!!). So her group has had pretty good success with sheer black body stockings (how that's any different to our community, I've never know). I've never worn one while dancing, and I've ordered one so that I can match the costuming and perform with her group, but I'm not really sure how to fit it into my style(which is very cabaret)... I'm feeling like it might look strange under the bedlah's and costumes that I have. There are discouragingly few pictures of dancers wearing them around the net. I've found several tribal pics, but that's just not my style. I was wondering if you all might point me in the direction of some pics (performance or photoshoot, it doesn't matter) of dancers wearing black body stockings, just so I can get some ideas of how to incorporate it in?

I don't think I have ever performed without a black body stocking! I just don't like the feeling of being naked (even when I actually had a belly that would have looked OK exposed). Also when I've danced in outdoor parades we were all encouraged to wear some kind of body stocking because, as you noted, it's considered more family-friendly.

IMO a black body stocking looks great with a costume that is also mostly black. It can look a bit off, in my view, with a costume that is not black at all. But you can have body stockings that match your costumes a la Suheir Zaki - that's a great look!

There are plenty of examples on that link. I like the look and it helps me when i'm feeling less than slender to get over being self conscious.

I like the monochromatic look as well and tried for it, but sadly didn't get the stocking in time.

The above link leads to a vendor who has a retail thread on bhuz. They are lovely to work with.

They also just sent me some fabric samples with my order and dude. I'ma need some new costumes to go with the stockings!!!

Just want to second Kina's comment that Belly Dancing Direct was wonderful to work with. I ordered three and one didn't match. But since they sent me a small set of samples, I was able to match and exchange one with no problem. They are very helpful and responsive to questions.

I haven't worn them yet, but have tried them on and really like how they feel and look.

I have body stockings by both Belly Dancing Direct and Flamenco Diva. Both kinds are really good for me. :)

Do they have to be black? You can get them in so many colors now, including metallics, metallicized colors, with sequins, etc.
