What are you working on December 2011

Yay, I get to start the December thread. Here's my new project. The skirt is mostly done. I still need to hem it and I'm going to do some sort of bead detail on the slit over the left leg (that you can't see in the photo). Hopefully this weekend I can get my bra and belt base made and covered with fabric. The beading will be all silver using hologram sequins and AB crystals.

Re: What are you working on December 2011

I just received a job lot of long white zips that I bought on ebay, so decided I should try to use them on the project I'd originally bought them for- a Costume Storage Bag.

The idea was to create a fabric "box", which would open with a zip around 3 of the top edges of the box. I was using some fabric I already had, which is stretchy, so not as stable as I'd have liked, but at least I'm using up the Stash. My zip inswertion is completely hideous and doesn't bear anything more than a passing glance. Having said all of that, I do still like it. And I have learned from the experience, and the next one will be better.

    Anyway, here is the result:

And with an actual costume in it, as per original purpose:

Also, if anyone ever needs long white zips (70cm), I've still got 99 of the blasted things, they're yours for the asking!

    Lovely Shahla!

Bea, I'm thinking your fabric box might need a new home, with Shahla's costume *grin*

Re: What are you working on December 2011

I bought my very first costume last weekend, 180€ instead of 380€, and now I'm in the process of making it fit and fixing up beading that's gotten loose etc.

Truth to be told I'm a little scared because I need to open up three straps above the hip so that I can put in longer straps so it'll fit me properly, it's a little too tight right now. I'll need to open up a little of the beading to remove one of the straps and well, I'm frightened that I'll ruin something. Wish me luck!

Re: What are you working on December 2011

After months of not wanting to work on anything I was suddenly inspired by watching My Little Pony BUT my husband threated to throw away all my costume making crap if I start another one without finishing my four unfinished and forgotten ones so...
I picked this one up again. It has crazy shine factor but the whole thing is not cohesive or attractive. I'm thinking about a different bra shape and removing all the gun metal and having it just the AB rectangle sequins.

Re: What are you working on December 2011

Lately, I've working mostly on customers' costume fixer-upper and such... So the kaki bra as been modified for my lovely friend Halima (before/after pics):

And this time for myself, I'm back working on my new silver rhinestones bedlah and I'm hoping to finish it for... next Saturday troupe christmas party (Yup! Last minute me again !)

I even work on the belt at work during my lunch breaks, lucky for me there's a lot of space filling with hot fix rhinestones, what a time saver!

I absolutely LOVE those BIG pear shaped crystals on the silver bra. Im fairly new to making my own costumes but i think ive been bitten by the bug. Does anyone know how i could get hold of these from the UK? I had a bit of a job finding the rectangle ones i got for my black and zebra costume. I got them from china in the end. Is there a good web site or somewhere anyone could recommend. thank you x

I got mine through an Ebay vendor, nts2009, she's very reasonable, and I was very happy with the service. Or you can go through her website direct: World Of Crystal

Unhappy Re: What are you working on December 2011

Ouch, ouch, ouch! I had a "designer accident" last night.... I was adding hot fix crystals with a hotfix tool. Everything was going good until one of the HOT crystal droped from the said tool right on the inside of one of my fingers... and of course the sticky side on the skin, so it was just sticking there and kept burning! Holy sh*&?%$!

Took me a few second to grad a Kleenex and finaly take the darn thing off my finger

No need to say the next time I use hot fix rhinestones, I'm keeping ice cool water nearby.

Ha, ha, ha! I am a real magpie, Miss Recycling here!

The huge flowers are not glass crystals but acrylic stones, but they are very sparkly, no scrach or flaws. Originaly, they were barettes glued on an elastic. The big round crystals are ear studs: I took the back pins off with a pair of cutters, glue them in place with Gem-Tam. They are crystals and really catch the light. The barettes and ear studs come from a dollar store, so that's $1 by flower and $0.50 by round crystal!

After everthing has been glued, I secure the whole shebang with threads and needle. But I know I'll have to be carefull with this bedlah when it comes to dance using a veil; rhinestones are unforgiveable.

Belt is coming good too, will try to post pics later tonigh.

I made a peacock costume for the DVD America's History of Belly Dancers of Color. And I'm working on taking of the peacock feather part so I can where as a bra/belt set with different skirts. But I would like to make the peacock part re-attachable. Maybe with a zipper or snaps

Welllllll i started to do some beading on this costume from last week. I am not in love with it but I am going to press forward to see what it looks like when all is said and done. But i really wanted the beading and something a bit more.... Just noy sure this was the right path lol

Picked up this goofy stretch faux lace print at wallyworld for 1.50$/yd. Figured it couldnt hurt to give it a shot. I have the bulk of the skirt done. I am going to order or go buy black lycra for accent.

I've never posted to a "working on" thread before but I have always enjoyed reading them! I started this in October and am desperately trying to finish it for a photo shoot in 2 weeks.
What started as a gag costume for a Halloween spoof performance based on 70's disco has been evolving into an elaborate bedlah. Since I take care of a child 12 hours a day and dye silks at night this has been done in snippets of 5-30 minutes at a time. Oh to have the time to do it all!!!

HHAHAH! That's what I was originally going to do - but well, it evolved. It's a fun project and a huge learning experience. I have so many cabaret costumes that I am now craving the unusual and one of a kind that only comes from making your own. Shushanna and Ozma were a huge help as resources. Those ladies have done the community a huge service by sharing their knowledge and experiences. I'm very grateful for them.
