Drawstring ponytail hairpiece: Looking for advice on fave vendors and how to matching my hair color

Since our local beauty supply places no longer carry the medium brown shades, I am planning on ordering a long straight drawstring ponytail on line. Trouble is, how do you make sense of their color charts? Is there a rule of thumb, like pick a shade lighter/darker than the photo? These places understandably have a no return policy on their pony tails etc, so I want to try and match as close as possible. I have med/dk, brown hair but of course it's not just ONE flat color brown. There are variations, a bit warmer than ash, but the color charts are hard to make out.

Who are some of your fave vendors for synthetic hair pieces?

Maybe when you've found something you like, you could send a little snippet of your own hair for shade matching?

Duh! I never thought of that. I guess I assumed they just "filled your order" and sent the hair on it's way. I can give that a try.

I don't have much hair to spare so I'd better narrow it down to one or two vendors!

Some of the major Internet wig stores (Vogue Wigs is one, WOW Wigs another) will match a snippet of your own hair. You can also order a ring of hair color samples for a particular manufacturer, which can sometimes be returned for credit against a purchase. Once you find your color number from a manufacturer, the color should be consistent across that manufacturer's product line, though not across different manufacturers.

It's worth looking at a few different manufacturers if you don't find a match right away. I'm basically a 12 (light golden brown) but on the redder side. Most 12s are too cool/ashy for me, but the one from Forever Young is just right. In general, Forever Young has some pretty realistic-looking inexpensive synthetic pieces. They have ponytails with both drawstrings and jaw clips -- you can remove the clip and use just the drawstring, or use both for extra security.

One good source for wigs of all sorts is ASAP Hair Makeover aka "thehairstop" on eBay. They don't always list the manufacturer, but their store is well-organized and easy to use, and they're good about answering questions. Jenny's Hair Sense also has dancer-friendly falls and nice sales. :)

I'm a fan of Hair Sisters - Lace front wigs / black hairstyles / bohyme hair / wigs / indian hair / saga remy / african american wigs

To echo Suzana, you can purchase a color wheel from most online sellers as well. Once you have an idea of where your hair falls on the color chart, you can easily buy hair online.

I'm a 1b and can also get by with a 2. (If you color your hair in a salon, your hair stylist will be able to suggest what numbers to use.)
