I would love to see photos of your Assiut costumes or pieces. I'll start with some old and some new pictures of me wearing assiut. The first photo is from a performance last weekend, not the best photo but you can see the fabric fairly well:

I no longer have this dress, I sold it on the bhuz swap meet because it was too big for me, but I'd love to have another one like it!

This last photo is from many years ago. I only wore the piece this way for the photo, not in performance:

The photo uploader is acting a little strange - I can't see the uploaded images until I click on "preview post." When I click "upload" they do show up in the post. I did a separate post for each image because of this issue.

Oh nice thread! I'm working on 2 for me right now. I've had the fabric for a long time intending to make 2 bedlah, but just haven't gotten around to it until now. I'll add pics as I go.

One of them is new black assuit with orange and yellow embroidery. I plan to mount this to a base and add silver fringe, beading, and turquoise scarabs. The other is a blue assuit hipscarf, that I will also mount to a base, but will not be adding any embellishments other than a central medallion that will fasten the belt together.

About 6 years ago I did tribal cholis and panel skirts from assuit (newer cheap stuff, not the richly done antique stuff).

I am also working on another bra/belt set and modifying an assuit dress right now.

Loving those colorful tribal cholis and panel sets! As well as all of the shiny antique assuit. I've gotta get my hands on some white/cream antique tulle bi teli one of these days.

Well I'm loving everything in this thread really!

This is "Dancers of the Crescent Moon" from Rakkasah 2010 - this is all "old" Assuit.

I don't have pictures of this and I want to share it, so I'm posting a video clip*. What I'm wearing used to be an Eman Zaki Sophisticated Assuit, which was a u-necked baladi dress style with matching bra, hip scarf and head scarf. I never really liked the way the bottom of the neck hit my body (I added the dowry necklace to try to camoflage that area), so I asked Shadia of Boston to divide the dress into a skirt and sleeved vest. She added a lining to the skirt and boning to the hip scarf to give it more shape, and made numerous other adjustments and fittings. Now it's become one of my favorite costumes :-)

This dress is precious to me and won't be altered or messed with. I've just ordered a less spiffy ivory one to dye and restyle in hopes of making it "cross over" a bit more from folkloric to oriental -- or at least from black to not-black. Wish me luck!

So gorgeouos, Suzana! When dyeing your new assiut, look into procion dyes, they work well and use cold water.

Maybe they'll have that up by the time Rakassah starts...
