Thread: Costume bras with the straps meeting between the cups?

How come I don't see more of that style? I actually like it, and it seems like it might even be more supportive for those of us what are...ah...somewhat floppy.

Do you have a picture of the type you are referring to? Because the way you have described it could mean several different styles.

Are you talking about the golden era style bra, like in Egyptian movies, like these...?




Maybe because they are not the best supportive device. I'm working on a Samia Gamal look alike costume with one strap from the center of the bra, and over one shoulder. But I'll cheat by adding skin tone regular halter staps because I'm not a fan of plastic clear straps.

I have made a bra that had straps coming from between the cups, and attaching at the back of the band (not halter style).

It was supportive and comfortable on me, but I'm only a B/C (and mostly for "acreage"), so I'm not the best judge. It was hard to get into. I made mine sewn to the band, and attaching between the cups with a large snap and pant hook.

Also, because it pulls from the center, it was not the best for creating cleavage because it pulls the cups towards an angle that is counter to the way they need to be angled for good cleavage.

Here is a pic. I ended up remaking the bra with regular halter straps. (And p.s. this costume is for sale in the swap pages!!)

I've got one costume that includes the centre straps, but also has normal straps.


I've also seen costumes with the centre straps paired with halter-neck straps.

I my best opinion, I think that for best fitting, the side straps have to be larger for better support. (like the one ssipes is wearing )

I think the straps coming from the centre would make it difficult to wear a necklace.

To be quite honest, I think that the tops with the straps meeting between the breasts plus halter straps have the visual look of the breasts looking really droopy, because the line of the straps make them look like the bottom of a "drop".
If you look at the photos of the older styles, you will see that the sides of the bra actually slope down, which gives the visual look of the centre straps pulling the breasts up. This seems to be more flattering than the "normal bra with centre straps" look.
But, in any case, I wouldn't think that this style would be particularly supportive.

Like anything else, straps meeting in the center front go in and out of style. It's just not the "in" thing right now. Here's my red Turkish bra with straps that meet in the center. I sold the bra and belt a few months ago.

IMHO, for anything other than shoulder or halter straps, the bra should be constructed as a strapless style, something that will stay up with no straps at all, so the "fancy" straps don't have to support much.

When I make my own bras I always start with a strapless base and this strategy has paid off. There's youtube video of me in an "Ancient Reflection" set mounted on my own bra base. I started with a strapless bra, and as I'm dancing, one of the shoulder straps pops off! I didn't realize it right away because my bra stayed firmly put.
