Turning Regular Straps into a Halter on Bra

    Helloo,
My troupe bought a set of red costumes in bulk and I am attempting to alter it myself. So far I have had no problems with taking the straps out from the back, but I am afraid to cut the straps short because all of the beads start falling. I have it pinned in the meantime. I bought the hooks from Michaels already.

Is there any trick or advice on cutting them in a way that won't allow the beads to just all fall off? or should I just sew the straps together so that I can undo it if I need to sell later? It doesn't look as nice that way.

In the past Ive cut the staps a good 2 or 3 inches longer than they need to be. Unpicked enough beading to have long enough strings to knot neatly. Then hem /cover the raw edges with the lining and sew the straps together at the back of the neck. I prefer this to adding hooks.

I have never cut straps when I turned them into a halter. By doing so, I lessen the resell value. I simply over lap them, leaving the beading intact. I then stitch them together.

I had a bra with super long fancy beaded straps. They were so long that they crossed behind my neck and hooked into the top of each bra cup!

A large overlap may not lay as smooth and flat as a short one, but it's better for resale if you leave the straps intact. Remember your audience is NOT going to be focusing on the back of your neck, and if they are, you're dancing wrong LOL! Seriously, leaving them intact and overlapped is the easiest solution and preserves the value.

Another option is to unfasten the straps from the cups. Starting at the back of the neck, position the straps as you want them to be. Reattach the cups to the straps, tucking the excess strap down inside the cup. Straps will be the proper length, no cutting necessary.

If you must cut the straps, fabric glue works well. Remove the lining so you can access the stitches on the back of the beadwork. Glue where you want to cut, let it dry, and cut through the glue so that each cut edge is sealed with glue.

If you want to get fancy, remove the lining, undo the stitches and save the beads. When you've adjusted the straps to the right length, use the old beads to rebead a nice edge so it looks like it was originally made that short.

I do this with all of my Bella's.

Peridotty - you can totally do this if you wanted to the troupe costumes.

I ended up leaving mine "normal" and then hookng them in the the center of my back for the "halter" look/affect.

Side bar to the back part of the equation...

when you shift from straight strap to halter- anyone have any problems with the angle and cup gappage?

I have a costume I purchased- and it was converted and I think because I am a C and the previous owner was a D- she filled it out and the angle didn't make as much of a difference- if I pull the straps straight back I have less gappage... but I don't particularly care for straight straps.

My best solution was the obvious to take off and re-align at the cup but I am curious if there are any other thoughts on that front angle?

I think moving the straps is the only option, Basha. I actually had the reverse problem, sort of. I made a costume for myself intending for it to have straight straps, but once I got the fabric on, it shifted the cups a bit (I'm not beading, so I didn't reinforce them fully) and now it will really only work on me as a halter. With the straps straight, there's gapping on the outside edges. The other option may be to pad the part of the cup that's closer to your underarm, to force the girls closer to the center and fill out the gap.

There is a thought.. I'm a pretty full C so I don't particularly need or care to pad- but I might give it a shot and see how it goes- I am not inherently opposed to it- I'd just rather not move them LOL

What are you using to hook the straps with in the back? The ribbon?
I ended up having Sivasa alter the bra into a halter anyway, but for future reference...
