This is probably the dumbest question you have ever seen...
(Iīm not a sewing dancer at all)Please donīt make fun of me!
Since I have so many stretch fabric scraps left,I figured that these canīt be too hard to make myself(and attach some fabric spirals to,for practice wear)
But how do the pieces look laid flat?

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
I think, and I could be wrong, that that is two rectangles sewn together with an unsewn section in the middle for the hips. OR EVEN one fat rectangle folded in half lengthwise and simply slashed along the fold line to make a hole in the middle for the hips.

Yeah, as soon as I wrote it I thought "on the other hand, it must have some kind of shaping at the top to sit that way".

two rectangles placed long edge together do the trick nicely- you can cut long or width wise to determine the length of the side tails. :)

Thank you for the thread, Emma! I've been wondering the same thing myself. If you're dumb for writing it, I'm dumber for not writing it!

LOL!

Beaīs tip works *perfectly* on my mockups;the curving line upwards adds a really nice fall to it:-)
When I digged out my stash I had holo stretch scraps, mesh scraps and old 100% cotton t-shirts that becomes nice ruffles for ties, edges and accents on the mini skirt when cut in a spiral and stretched on one side:

Hey emma-bessa, sounds so cute, love to see a picture. Your post reminded me of my cute little overskirt post, which ended up being a rectangle with a slash in the middle.

Yes, anyone who makes a hip skirt-thingy as a result of seeing this thread should definitely post a picture!

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
I did it yesterday. I have two yards of sparkly black glitterdot-type stuff (the dots are black), so a little bit of it became an overskirt. I feel I could have gone longer on the tails, and am contemplating doing a second under-layer in another fabric, as this was so very easy. I'll post a pic later.
Thank you for posting the pattern pic!!!Last edited by Tiziri; 07-03-2012 at 08:55 AM.

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
I have some sheer sparkly leopard print glitterdot fabric that I've been wondering what to make of for ages, not quite enough material for a skirt, not comfortable enough texture for a top--this thread has given me the answer! Will post when I've made it.

Now itīs fab weather here(seldom happen in Sweden) and itīs slow at the officeand right now Iīm making a headband fascinator for my stepdaughter(with the help of fabric glue,of course..)
So Iīll save the project for a rainy day-but will post a picture of the results later:-) Again,THANK YOU Bea!

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
OK...photo!
Longer black glitterdot overskirt with shorter tails...and red crushed velvet with longer tails. I only had 1/2 yard of the red, so it is a shorter skirt, hence I'm wearing it over the black, which I like the looks of better anyway. In bad lighting. I thought about attaching them to have one layered skirt, but think I'll leave them separate.
I like 'em, and now my daughter wants one (or two). Thank you, Bea, for posting the pattern!

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
I agree, keep them separate. That way, you can make more in different colours and swap them around!
Thanks for posting the photo! It's inspiring me to make one or two of these for myself! (Goes off to look through the fabric stash, and see what leftovers could be used...)

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
Just finished this set, using Bea's pattern for the skirt. Really easy once I'd decided on the
measurements. Thanks Bea! I have another one planned.
Sorry about the flash light, but at least I didn't have to disguise myself!!

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
This may be a potentially stupid question (I'm not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination), but I skimmed the thread again & didn't see any mention of it.... How do you handle the top edge of the skirt/wrap? Do you put in elastic, or what?

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
The ones I've bought have a plain serged/cover-stitched top edge, with the natural stretch of the fabric providing enough elasticity for getting it on & off.
However, personally I prefer a slightly more secure feeling around my hips. So when I made mine, I added an elastic to the top edge, so that it would grip more tightly. I used the same technique that I use for adding elastic to skirt tops: folding the fabric over the elastic, and using a wide zigzag stitch.
And I'm sorry I've got no photos of mine- it's not yet finished. I want to add some sequins or other decoration, but I'm still in the throes of the 5-A-Day Baladi Costume.

Re: How is the pattern cut for these mini skirts/hip wraps?
I put elastic in mine as I also like a secure fitting. I just used several bits of 1inch elastic sewn together that I had left over, turned the top over like Bea and zig zag stitched it. I made the top pretty snug so didn't have to use much of a stretch in the elastic.
