    What's a cozzie?

Sorry, (I feel embarased to ask this question!) I just didn't know which forum to ask this question. I've seen dancers write "cossie" or "cozzie", but what does that mean? Is it a dress or does it relate to a bra and belt or a bra and skirt or is it by a designer named Cossie or Cozzie? .w.:

Oh, shoot! Hope I'm not wrong 'bout this, but I always use the term "cossy" as short for "costume"... Please correct me if I'm wrong...!

    Re: What's a cozzie?

Yes, it is used by a lot of people short for costume. However - it's been discussed here a loooong time ago - that the word "cossie" refers to something completely different in Arabic. ;) and for Arabic speakers it must be hilarious to read it.

(on that note I have to share this: the word "kisses" in Hungarian is pretty much the same as pussy in "pussycat". - puszi. (but as we know it refers to something else as well :). I knew a couple, the husband was American, the wife Hungarian. When the Hungarian mom visited here, she kept saying "give me kisses" " adj egy puszit". The husband only heard he "pussy" part and his reply was : wow, I love Hungarians! They're wild!
Another story, now that I'm thinking about this: the word Thanks in Hungarian is very similar to cossie, and I once made a mistake trying to teach that to a guy in a hookah lounge - at his request - with a large percentage of Arabs. Imagine the interesting / interested looks we got !! it's kind of funny, but also embarrassing.)

    Re: What's a cozzie?

Australians say "cozzie" to mean swimming costume (or, as we NZers correctly call them, "togs"). Those sick perverted freaks!

The "pussy" thing always squicks me because the word really is a perfectly normal word for "cat" here - it's the equivalent of that "kitty" thing I see online so much - and I will always call my cat by calling "puss puss puss".

I presume you all know the "fanny" issue for speakers of non-US English by now, right?

    Re: What's a cozzie?

Yes, as another NZ'er togs are for swimming, cossie to me has always been costume ( as in clothing for something other than street wear) - and Aussies call their 'togs' cozzies. When I first came to Aussie many moons ago, I tended to say I was going to the dairy to buy milk... the Aussies thought I was kind of strange and would proceed to explain there was no need to go to the dairy for milk, you can get it at the milkbar ( dairy in NZ was = to Aussies milkbar ... aka corner/local store, I think in US you call them drug stores? which is kind of funny to me, as I picture the pharmacist selling milk LOL!)

For the record, I don't like it when they're called "cossies." It seems weird.

Oddly enough, me too. It creeps me out in a way that I usually reserve for adults talking about their private parts as "down there" instead of using more dirrect words...no clue why.

Don't forget Aussies also wear their thongs with their cozzies :)

cozzie isn't rude in Arabic but there is a word that sounds like coursi which is a part of the female anatomy

Well if it is pronounced the way I am reading it, it could be confused with "kus"...female part down the southern front.....I also had to learn that one of our favorite dishes "couscous" should not be said in Egypt or you will see horrified looks and hear snickers...

Couscous is apparently innappropriate in Jordan as well. My Jordanian friend said to say "maftoul."

I hear it pronounced "skooskoo" in Moroccan Arabic, "couscous" in English or French.

Yeah, the way Squick sounds perfectly describes how a squicky thing makes you feel.

Cossie - I always figured it was a brit or aussie thing. I would see on travel forums, people asking whether or not they would need to bring a cossie on vacation. what kind of cossie to wear, etc.

To add to Bhuz' "pussy"-tradition of linguistic discourse around the world: In German, Muschi is a name used for cats, perfectly child-safe beyond any doubt (at least in my days). But, there's room for confusion: Muschi is also used to refer to the vulva.

It's interesting how that linguistic parallel applies in different languages!

    Re: What's a cozzie?

I don't know where togs comes from except that it is short for "swimming togs", with "togs" standing in for "clothes". and the magic of Google informs me that it may indeed stem from toga, by well of togue which is an old French word for cloak.

Bogan = hmm, white trash is probably the closest equivalent. Pioli - politician. Pauline Hanson, specifically.

I would like to preface this by saying I know nothing about New Zealand /immigration to , and influences on, however whenever I hear New Zealand slang comes it reminds me of British Slang from about 200 years ago. Like the way you call vest tops 'singlets'. Whenever I hear singlet, I always imagine shakesphere in his singlet and hose.

My favorite 'Australian' word: choccie biccie!

But we don't call 'togs' 'cossies' down here in Melbourne...they'd be 'bathers'.

    I can't stand the term 'fanny bag'...ewww!

I still call them singlets a vest is what goes over your outer top/shirt etc.

My husband is from Malaysia and he use to laugh at the word singlet ( he is use to it now after 23yrs) - he said he always saw in his imagination a Singh ( turban wearing Indian gentleman with a small "singh-let" in tow meaning with a small child) Oh yes another one, Nz'ers wear jandals, Aussies wear thongs ( not sure what anyone else calls them..g.: ( incase there are those out there who don't know what I mean, they are those slip-slops ( Malaysians call them that) originally made of rubber with the piece of rubber that goes between the toes. (OK here is a pic just in case i have left everyone confused..c::)

I am sure you are already aware, but thong here means that underwear that has a string at the back. I had many a happy giggle at the thought of this portly man (australian) who used to work in my office, who kept talking about wearing his gold thongs on the beach.

Ah, but we didn't have "thongs" as underwear when I was growing up . . . we didn't even have "bikinis" . . . more full coverage back in the "stone age" of my childhood. So, "thongs" were what we now call "flip-flops" . . I called those rubber sandals "thongs" too. I don't wear "thongs" on my feet or my over generous backside . . . sort of defeats the purpose of "no panty line" when you can see that piece pulled down onto the flesh at the top of the rear . . . and I can almost always tell when someone is wearing a thong because something else usually gets hung up on the crack (sorry , I had to say it ) .

Oh, I grew up in the southen part of the States and live in Texas now (for about 40 years?? yikes how time flies) . . a whole nother conversation.

I would giggle about that guy and his gold thongs too!!!
