    New skirt ideas?

I'm bored with the circle skirts and the tulip skirts.... Any other ideas out there for fun-to-dance-in skirts???

    Thanks!

    Re: New skirt ideas?

But in general I love circle skirts. Have you considered just cutting them differently? Cut a scalloped edge along the bottom, or cut deep slits into it, or add a ruffle along the edge, or have a straight panel in front, circle and back?

    Re: New skirt ideas?

This is a great idea book with some good instructions if you sew:

Skirting the Issues and Pants for the Dance

    Sarongs!
    Tiers!
    Sheaths!
    Handkerchief hems!

And also she points out that you can alter your "basic skirt" by jazzing it up with interesting skirt topper shapes.

Skirts! I love making them. Hate hemming them, though...

    Re: New skirt ideas?

If I were to go into business making bellydance items right now, it would be skirts with matching sleeves of some kind (similar to what L. Rose does). It's very tough to find interesting sets, and Dahlal's new line just mimics what L. Rose was already offering, but without the sleeves and U-tops :(

    What I *wish* was available:

    - carwash skirts in striking color combos

    - Mermaid skirts with solid/stretch tops and sheer/sparkly bottoms

    - Those leggy skirts Neckelmenn's used to sell (I think Tony & Robbie still make them but have NO idea where to get one)

    - Sweeping 1/4 circle skirts, shaped like the classic Sahar costume skirt.

    - Crocheted skirts with the sequins worked in.

I'm a die hard Madame X Mermaid and Fishtail skirt fan. They are very flattering and worth the 5 or so yards of fabric and 2 days of sewing. I made one out of thrifted zebra print knit fabric, matching gauntlets out of scrap. Stunning while worn, skirt spins out so prettily!

    How about a BAGS?

    Big A$$ Gypsy Skirt...

Love 'em, the bigger the better! Just finished one up - it is, of course, a variation of a circle skirt; but its big, heavy and spins like a dream.

YES!!! Why doesn't anyone make these?!

I have one custom-made costume from Invoke the Goddess with a carwash skirt and I just love the style. I would love to be able to get them as seperates to wear with bedlah. I attached a pic of the style.

Those Russian skirts are amazing, in kind of a wedding-cakey way.

Here's a whole thread about car wash skirts.

    Carwash Skirts!?!?!?

I remember on one of the old-school instructionals (Bellydance: Slow Moves with Atea and Friends) one of her dancers wore a costume, probably self-made, with a carwash skirt that was half-black, half-white. It was awesome!

I have a Pharonics Sweet Escape like Kina posted. I wear it with booty shorts underneath. I'd LOVE to have more of those!

How about a so-called "Turkish" 2 panel skirt? I just made an outfit with one, unfortunately, no pictures (yet).

Wow, those Russian skirts are incredible!

I love skirts that combine different fabrics, like the Pharaonic Emans. Here's one I bought (a Joharah):

Hey, thanks! I don't have a pattern for it, unfortunately. I based it on the Joharah but didn't keep the tissue-paper template I made.

I did post photos of my process, though, that show the shapes of the panels in more detail.

I loved this skirt! I can't seem to find a picture of it, though, and my VCR is broken. :( Were the panels straight down or at an angle?

The reason I don't make anything other than circle skirts for sale is because so many of them require custom measurements. I think I might do up a couple of car wash styles because they don't require so much fitting.

I had some overskirts a few years ago, but when most people shifted away from the bra & belt sets over to the lycra skirts I quit making them. Fashion runs in cycles, though, so maybe it's time to start them up again?

I don't have the video any more either, Andrea, how funny you remember it too! I remember the panels hung straight down, but they may have been angled at the hipline. Was she wearing a belt or was the top of the skirt decorated? If it's being worn with a belt, it may not matter.

If you decide to do the carwash skirts, let me know! I would take one in bright orange/yellow in a minute!

For a little while, it seemd like bra/belt sets were IMPOSSIBLE to find, but they do seem to be making a comeback. Overskirts I'm not sure about. People seem to want a leaner look these days, less of the eclectic multi-layering that was once popular (Tribal Fusion has adopted that look like a boss, but with a different aesthetic).

For those who would like to make one of these but shudder at up-sizing the pattern to full size, you can buy a pattern from Artemis Imports:

Suzanna's Swirl Skirt - Artemis Imports

Actually, Yolanda has a LOT of skirt patterns available, most of them under the Atira's Fashions line: Costume Patterns - Artemis Imports

For anyone who wants to emulate the vintage American Oriental style of belly dance of the 1970's and 1980's, these patterns are a gold mine. I've made many, many costumes using Atira's patterns over the decades!
