Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I gained 4 lbs. while on vacation in Hawaii. I ate EVERYTHING put in front of me. I only walked twice so I was SO ready to get to the gym yesterday. I had a terrific workout. Hopefully, those 4 lbs. will melt off like butter. A girl can dream ya know!!!
Current weight" 167.
Goal weight for my b-day (2/16) is 160 lbs.

Congrats on the loss Gwyncara!
I'm only down 1/2 lb this week, but I didn't get to the gym as much as I wanted and I'm noticing more toning, so I'm happy. :)

Great job on the toning Miriam and half a pound is still great too! Michelle, did you honestly expect to diet on a vacation to Hawaii?? You enjoyed the experiences and the foods, right? As long as you enjoyed it, let it go.

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
ssipes--your pics were gorgeous!!!! That blue is so beautiful on you at any size, but congrats on the weight loss--you look fantastic and sexy in the first picture but TOTALLY ROCKIN' HOT!!! in the second. Whew! And I like that you still have curves. :-)
Well...my own weight loss is going slowly, but that's partially by design, especially since I'm on the non-diet diet. (No big changes, just small easily sustainable ones--because of family health history/health issues thing, I don't want to gain or lose weight too quickly, and want to be able to stop the weight loss when I hit the recommended weight.) But I've been consistently losing about 2-3 lbs a month since I started in November, so now I'm halfway there! About another 7 lbs to go, which means if I can keep steadily going at this rate, I should be done by June. That will be about a year since the Prednisone started the mess (which I then didn't help). I've decided to not worry about the last 3-4 lbs after that 7 that would get me down to the weight I was before the weight gain. If I lose them, I lose them, but I'm not going to try to. I think I might actually look/feel a little bit better at 3-4 lbs over my original weight anyway, esp. since I've been building some muscle and I think my face might have looked a little thin right before the weight.

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
Hey lady! Welcome! Sounds like last year was a rough year for a lot of people. Many people I know anyway....
The skipping meals thing is a big thing!!! Especially breakfast! Seriously--my husband and I have both been working on some weight loss--me on a very slow plan (see prev.post) and him on a less slow plan. Making sure to eat a decent breakfast with PROTEIN every morning has helped immensely. Boosts the metabolism right away in the morning and makes us less hungry later in the day, for one thing. As a vegetarian and someone who's always on the run, breakfast is now my most important meal (I can have eggs or oatmeal with protein powder and nuts etc.)...lunch and dinner may be smaller if necessary and/or there may be healty snacks in there, but breakfast is not to be missed. Hubby's eating has changed to be more like breakfast then 4 other small meals during the day most days (he's a big man...) rather than 3 huge meals like he used to. It's helping a lot.
And yes! Kill the soda pop! That high fructose corn syrup is awful for you, and there was a recent study that said even diet sodas are bad for weight (I forgot why they hypothesized that would be, but they found there was a correllation between diet sodas and weight gain/obesity too.) Here's what I was told to do for bevs: Water, hot tea, some coffee...if you must drink your calories, look for a fruit juice that is 100% fruit juice and has some nutrients (like orange juice, pref. not apple or a "juice cocktail"), and if you must get something like an iced tea or other bottled drink, look for something non-carbonated made with real sugar (no high-fructose corn syrup) or possibly a sugar substitute like sucralose, but go easy on those because too much sugar isn't good and the research is inconclusive about whether the sugar substitutes are actually helpful in the long run. ;-)
Congrats on the 10-1/2 lbs!!! Good luck going forward!

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
Mirah Ammal, I love how sensible you're being! I've managed about a half pound a week, too, it seems to the best my body can reasonably be expected to lose.
I've been eating much better, but I'm puffing up! I've gained about 3 pounds in the past week, but it looks more like 10 on my body -- I added 3 inches to my waist!!
I know it's hormonal bloat, but it's past time for it to go AWAY and that's not happening for some reason. I'm trying to be patient, but it's frustrating to be working so hard and gaining weight.

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
Just popping in for a minute to reaffirm my commitment to eating healthy and maintaining my current weight - I made my goal! Today is 8 months since I began my new way of eating. I have lost 43 lbs. and feel terrific (except for the crappy head cold that I have today).
I weigh and measure my food so I know exactly how much I am eating and can keep it the same amount every day. I eat 4 times a day with 4-5 hours between meals. I don't eat sugar, flour, wheat or any processed foods. Sometimes I'm not very inspired by my own cooking. But I feel so much better and my blood sugar stays stable throughout the day that it is totally worth it.
I rarely feel deprived because by eating the right proportions of protein, veggies, starch, dairy and fruit throughout the day my body and mind respond in such a good way. The food may not always be inspired but it creates a sense of well-being that is worth more to me. And many of the meals I create are absolutely delicious. Eating in restaurants can be a challenge, but it can be done, too.
I have a support group that makes it possible for me to stick to my plan. They are a great bunch of women.
So hang in there, everybody, eating healthy is worth the trouble.
End of pep talk! ..l;,

I'm having a tough time--went wine tasting this weekend with my mom and we had a ball (and a lot of wine and chocolate). Now I'm struggling to get back to reality. Today, I started off well and I plan to stay on track!

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
I have to admit, my eating is WAY up and WAY down. I'm not supposed to be concentrating on the eating as much as the working out, but I have a hard time not obsessing (over everything, really). I AM working out consistently and I am very happy about that. I bought a BOSU last weekend and have used it a couple times- I actually made it to the gym this week for my workouts - last week was too cold to be out of the house at 6am! I did wo at home though - yay! :) I love the routine my trainer gave me this week, though in the middle of the first run through I have to admit I cursed at her...and while very embarrassed, I believe it's a good sign- it means she pushed me past my comfort level, in a very good way. And once I made it through it with her, I have done it completely on my own and it seems surprisingly easier each time I do it. AND I am positive I feel muscle under my flub. YAY again! :D
Dunyah: can you post an example of a day's menu?
GwynCara: did you make it to the bellyball? I didn't :( I really hope to be at the next one; I love Josephina and what she is creating there.

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
Ugh...this week has sucked--the temperature dove below zero for a lot of the upper great lakes area, and all that makes some of us want to do is drink hot beverages and eat carbs and junk you normally don't want to generate heat and store fat. Even my cats are eating like pigs and then curling up on the heating vents. I shouldn't even be hungry but...yeah, I could probably eat a big plate of pasta, drink a vat of hot chocolate and go to bed for a few hours.
Maybe I'll go make some tea instead....
Why do I live here again? My people were not biologically engineered for this. *sniff* Spring has to come sometime, right?

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
MirahAmmal- I just compared the temp in MN and in ME and I guess I have to stop complaining about our cold weather...32 vs 6. I'm so sorry! :(
Tea is so yummy! I love peppermint in the afternoon (if I successfully resist the Swedish Fish...unlike today); it's warm, it's soothing and the peppermint makes me almost feel like I am actually having a dessert.

Re: 2008 Diet Thread! It's ON!
Yeah...6...and that's BEFORE the windchill (for those of you in the south, "windchill" is this horrible thing where the still air measures an unbelievably cold temperature, but then the wind blows and makes the temperature against your skin utterly-and-impossibly cold--they can actually measure this!!!)
Oh well...I told my students last night that this is a PERFECT opportunity to practice their shimmies litterally EVERYWHERE they go! Everyone's freezing--even when you're inside and it's warm, no one can know for sure that you're not still working out the chill from being outside or getting too close to a door or window, so just shimmy like a maniac 24x7 for the next week. Think how good you'll all get at it!
