Tribal Scarves: how to keep on/tie/embellish costume with etc

    Hi,

I know this has been asked like a million times, but I can't seem to find it using the search for the website.

I have lots of interesting fringed scarves but don't have a clue how to make them drape and stay on when using the typical belt with two rings in the front to close. (not even sure if I'm doing that right either :-/ )

Could someone please let me know how they put on their tribal belt and add scarves and knot them on? How do you decorate with scarves if you're wearing dance pants instead of a skirt? Also, I have quite a bubble butt, so straight belts have to be the width of string to sit right on my behind.

Could you help a sista out?

    Thanks

There's no right or wrong way to wear scarves. Just put them on, play with them and experiment!

Triangle scarves with two fringed edges can be a challenge because they are cut on the bias. Woven fabrics have threads that run in two directions, like +. The sides are stable and don't stretch. When the fabric is turned so the threads form a cross, like x, an edge cut horizontally or vertically through the x is stretchy.

So, when that stretchy edge is tied around the hips, it stretches. It may stretch and fall off while dancing. Or just stretch to the point where it just doesn't look good tied around the hips.

To avoid this, you'll need to either modify the long edge, or make little tucks and pull them up well under a secure belt. Safety pins can be used for removable tucks (but they can leave holes in fragile fabrics). Or, if you plan to use the scarf only for dancing, you can add elastic and a casing.

If I'm envisioning it right, you're using the scarves under the belt. When I've worn costumes like that, I've usually kept the ends of the scarves straight, pulled them so that they overlapped each other and then safety-pinned them in. That way, they were secure but I didn't have to deal with a bulge from the knot.
