Thread: What IS a Sahar bra made from?

Piggy-backing on many other comments...thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your ideas...especially with the tutorial pictures. I had conjured up some pretty ridiculous images about the hot glue bra until I saw the photos. ..l;, I know there is a lot of time spent with trial and error until one finds something that works. I've made 2 costumes so far, but I didn't want to start another knowing that the bra would probably be the exact same shape as the previous one. Thanks to you ladies, now I'm excited to get on with the next attempt.

Firefly, did you ever finish the total costume? Can you please post pics? I'm so inspired, maybe after all the baby stuff I'll make one of my own! ..g.:

Ok you guys might find this weird but they are regular cups just turned up side down and the sides are switched. I know that makes no sense but I swear that's it. The angle is very extreme and they line them with this heavy stiffened hard shell after they are beaded. I know cause I do the same thing and order all this stuff from an iranian wholesaler.

Huh. Well would you look at that. You know...suddenly now it makes sense to me why sometimes the fit is weird on people with boobs but small rib cages--The wrong side of the cup is down so you end up with a funny "flap" under the arm that has to be dealt with somehow.

I'm going to try my hand at a similar skirt, but... how does she get 92" across? Most of my fabrics are 45" wide, or at best maybe 54 or 60"

is it cut on the bias?

probably, but no matter which way I turn my pattern on my fabric I can't get that kind of shape. I think I'll cut mine in two sections & have a seam up the back.

I don't know if this will exactly make sense or actually answer your question. I drew this up for a 40" long 1/4 circle "sahar" skirt based on Damiena's photos.

Perfect, rscramer - I was just thinking of how to describe that in words... Usually if you want a flattering fluid skirt, its shape needs to be part of a circle...

I fold the fabric so the selvage is folded on itself and cut the pattern that way... If that makes sense... Ive only ever needed 2 meters/yards

Thank you! It just never occurred to me to do anything besides fold the fabric so the selvages meet and cut along that fold.... now I know what it's like to get trapped inside 'the box' and not be able to think your way out.

and this is why I don't sew, I have NO idea what that means!
