Eye spackle...uugh
Ok...no girlie girl here - so dont you dare laugh! I buy this make up book cause while a little lipstick and mascara is a must just to get the mail..I have never had any real instruction about applying exotic makeup..like concealer. So I get some stuff that looks like lipstick except it's skin colored and apply to my bags...er...delicate under eye area, and behold..no shadows or bags, nifty! Now, I cant walk around looking that, well, greasy - so I take loose powder and one of those big 3 stooges powder puff in the face thing-ies and prodeed to absorb all the moisture out of the concealer by banging the hell outta my eye..I now look like I have the surface of Mars under my eyes...e.v.e.r.y small wrinkle and or crease is now in bas relief.....help!!! Is this just supposed to be ok for photo shoots and stage lights??? Eeee gad...I look really old now!..cr.: ..cr.: ..c::

No putting make-up (esp powder!) on the wrinkles, as Melania recently pointed out! Maybe try blotting paper or something to absorb the excess oil in the concealer? Or, find a concealer that works okay as-is...
Also, you're only supposed to apply the concealer to the shadowy areas, not all over the under eye area. I'm sure the make-up whizzes will have some good advice for ya.

The Hastings Big Book of Makeup showed a total white..no...pink out under the subjects eye..and into the naso labial fold as well. And then loose powder to take the "grease" out. Looked great in the photo!!!

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
I find the stick stuff is too thick and greasy for under my eyes, as well. I use a liquid Cover Girl concealer. I dot it on with a little wand with a sponge on the end--just two or three dots under each eye. Then I pat the dots gently with a finger to spread them around the baggy area. The stuff isn't greasy or cakey.
Here's a link:
Fresh Complexion Under Eye Concealer :: CoverGirl
Hang onto the stick stuff, though, in case you ever need to cover a pimple or something like that.

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
Did the model have the same conditions as you? Age? Skin tone? Skin type?
Sonia Kashuk (Target. Don't laugh at me, MUAs!) makes a very dry, highly pigmented concealer stick in a lipstick tube. I like it a lot. What colour are your under eye "characteristics?"
LESS is more. Apply onto moisturized under eye skin area with flat nylon brush with feather light strokes or with ring fingers (the weakest fingers; doesn't pull the skin as hard) in spare spare spare amounts. You needn't add powder, and definitely shouldn't if you have lines and if your concealer is good. Aveda makes a nice concealer, too.
It's double edged, you want good concealer that is pigmented but that kind often settles into the lines and shows off more than it's supposed to hide. Once my makeup DVD is done, I'll "be there" with you to show you, and on someone with similar characteristics.

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
I *cannot* get concealer to work for me. When people in shops do it I look, I don't know, like I have a cold and my eyes are all shrunken. I like having darker colour around my eyes. I would really like just to hide the bags, but concealer seems to exaggerate them in a performance context. If I apply it to the light bit, they pop and become huge. If I apply it only to the hollows, which are darker, it doesn't really do anything and certainly doesn't cause them to vanish. I just give up and use foundation - it's better, I find.

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
yeah....i dont like concealer because i have dry skin and it makes me look 10 years older. I was actually taught to take my powder and mix (separately) with a little bit of lotion.
if you want to try it, it works pretty good because it ends up being the same color as your powder, and if you make it thick enough it is still enough coverage for the dark circles
trust me! I'm no good at makeup advice, but I'm the queen of young girls with black circles.....this might not be best for stage makeup, but it is great for trips to the mall!

smashbox makes a great little item that you can apply alone or on top of concealer, it reflects light, so by illusion you look lik eyou have less circles :-)

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
Try applying the concealer with a nylon brush, as Azhia says. It will put less product on your face, so there is less to settle in lines. I think if you add powder, put it on lightly too. I occasionally use a fluffy eyeshadow brush for this purpose, because I hate to get powder in my contacts. Also I don't think you need to put concealer under the entire eye area - just the portion that's purple-ish.

Here's what I learned: First, put a little bit of concealer on the back of your hand, to warm it up and make it melt a tad. Then pick up with a clean finger and carefully dab a little bit under the eyes.

wow..I wole up and the wisdom of the universe is at my fingertips...does anybody sleep? I have the 2nd worst skin type... old - with pimples. I cant believe I still get zits at my age. The bags are not discolored..it is the small shadow that they cast just underneath them. Geee, thanks Mom...

Cheap and effective version of Touche Eclat: Boots No. 7 Instant Radiance Concealer. Love it! It dries in place so you don't have to powder over it. It's slightly reflective, so use it sparingly and blend well -- it comes with a skinny brush applicator but I usually use a wider, flatter (pinky-fingernail-sized) concealer brush to blend. You can get it at most Target stores and some CVSes in the US now.
Speaking of Target: When I do use powder, I get less of a spackle effect with Sonia Kashuk "transparent" loose powder than anything else, and I use it for stage a lot because it doesn't change the color of whatever's underneath. I've always been a fan of Bobbi Brown's powders, especially the light yellow one, but it's been really nice to find something that works well at a far lower price.

PS: Your box is in Alamogordo, says USPS! Let's hope your letter carrier off somewhere isn't playing dress-up with the goods.

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
omg - you're my twin! these two products together are my sure-fire arsenal to combat bags + shadows. the ooh la lift will smooth out the bags, and the touche eclat, well, it's only the most miraculous makeup product I've ever used in my life!
I use a liquid concealer by MAC - the kind with the wand with the shaggy little pad at the end. if I need more coverage than the one-two punch described above (or if they're out in my car and I'm too lazy to go get them!) I dab some around the inside corner of my eye - top and bottom, not just underneath - and blend with a fluffy synthetic brush.
AND - for those of us with older/dryer/more wrinkled skin - use a foundation primer first. it will fill in the cracks so your makeup won't settle into them. and staying well moisturized always helps.

Elisa & Co. -- is it possible for a liquid or creamy concealer to stay in place without anything over it, or are you also powdering somewhere along the way?

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
for all the money i've spent over the last 20 years on make-up, the ONLY concealer that's worked so far is the 'multi-tasking' concealer by everyday minerals.....for everyday i just dot the problem spots n shadows in the eye, and for performance, i foundation first, conceal, very thin dusting of foundation to blend, and powder to set............i use other products like bobbi brown, MAC (looooove MAC) and smashbox for color, liner, lips.....
i've got the same issue as some, zits n older skin with fine lines.....so after standard concealing and powdering, only to see the texture of stucco, i was willing to try anything.....finally found it..........
but i HAVE learned alot about some of the reflective aspects.....i've heard about it, and always feared it
so, azhia, about that dvd..............

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
Sorry to be a pest with the follow-up questions, but here's another one:
Ruta, are you using an EM foundation with their multitasking concealer, or some other foundation? I just bought some samples from them and am trying to find just the right combo. Thanks!

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
yep, it's the only foundation i use now, i use the intensive neutral buff for foundation (best coverage, almost matte, controls oil while not as drying as the other formulas, plus, no talc or bismuth, and an spf15), then put the concealer on visible blemishes, and under eye, very light dusting of foundation again just to blend and silk dust finishing powder to set............ it actually makes my skin look naturally flawless, especially for gigs, and doesn't break me out like all the other make-ups do.....my skin is just annoying, on top of older/acne, it's combination and VERY sensitive.....right now i feel like a molting lizard thanks to the cold snap we had here, AND broke out thanks to our monthly 'lil fren'..............
but for colors i love, love, love mac for eye, bobbi brown and mac for liner, varied for lip, but alot of EM colors work for everyday, i don't think they're pigmented enuf for performance

Re: Eye spackle...uugh
May I suggest Biotherm's Forget It Concealer. It is not super cakey, but very pigmented and dries matte. I got when my skin was very irritated and constantly broken out. I use it now to brighten under my eyes and around my nose. I make sure to moisturize before using under my eyes though. I luuuurve it.
Mineral foundations add about 10 years to my face.
