How to make trumpet and gypsy skirts...?
How do you make a trumpet skirt? A gypsy skirt? Anyone try attempting this on their own? I know some on here do this very well. Can't remember, though. How many yards of fabric does it usually need at minimum?

Re: How to make trumpet and gypsy skirts...?
Madame X has a great trumpet skirt pattern. About 2.5 yards, I believe.
Gypsy skirts - are you talking the 10 - 25 yard tiered skirt or the egyptian style one? For the latter, there is a pattern made by Folkloric Patterns called belly dancer (I think) which was designed in cooporation with FCBD.
You can also get a lot of info from shira.net

Re: How to make trumpet and gypsy skirts...?
Trumpet skirt will probably take 4-5 yards because the godets are cut on the bias. Gypsy skirt depends on how many circles you start with, how may ruffles, etc. But count on LOTS!!! They are usually referred to by the number of yards around they are: 10, 15, 20, 25 yards.
Check out the costume goddess books. She has instructions for several varieties of both.

Go to Nadyas sewing instruction (choose English version) and click on the "Tribal" section. Everything is there to create a gypsy skirt, mesurements of the fabric, how to cut it, etc.

Re: How to make trumpet and gypsy skirts...?
Many people who have made their own 25-yard skirts have reported that making these oneself is not worth the hassle, and most certainly not the ideal beginning costumer project. To begin with, the effect depends on the fabric, and the right gauzy cotton is hard to come by, and not all that cheap.
I make many things myself, but those skirts, I buy. I'd recommend trying a simple circle skirt instead.

I like "Bellydance Costume Patterns".

They have some trumpet skirt patterns for bellydancers. I've used pattern #3001 which is a Christina style skirt, and I was very pleased with the results.
They have their own website somewhere, with more patterns but I can't find it right now.

Re: How to make trumpet and gypsy skirts...?
I use the Madame X as mentioned in the first thread Kiyaana linked to. Yes, about 2.5 yards if the pattern and nap of the fabric is such that you can flip the pattern to get more out of the same piece of fabric and you're using only three panels. If it isn't, I tend to figure about a yard for each panel (you can use as many panels as you wish and just adjust the math for your customizations) and use the left over fabric for making a shrug, guantlets, headbands, etc.
