Thread: Honest Opinion Sought - Is this Hokey??

Okay, so I need an honest opinion and it will not hurt my feelings at all - so go ahead and state your thoughts.

I bought this costume in Nov. used from a fellow bhuzzer who was retiring from dancing. It is unique and so I was drawn to it. The skirt has never fit me right though. I get muffin top and unsightly bulges even with a shaper undergarment. I have a midriff power net I can wear, but I get really hot in it, so I prefer not to. Plus, my bellyring always catches on the netting and hurts.

So, please look at these photos of the before and after and tell me if it looks hokey to tie the coverup veil around the waist like this. I would, of course, fasten it on for performance, but I just want to know before I do that if it looks bad. I need a quick fix for this weekend and, since it is close to Valentine's Day, I would like to wear this red costume, but please, please tell me if this takes away from my professional look in any way.

BTW - I know the top does not fit in the photo, but I have since removed the pads and all is well now.

I don't think its hokey, I think its cute! The top of the skirt looked a little unfinished anyways. If you wanted to make it look more "on-purpose" and less "last-minute", you could construct a little medallion with fringe like the one in the center of the skirt to affix over the knot of the veil...

PS- Either you lost weight between the top and bottom pictures, or the veil tie is a very effective illusion!

I like the look of it with the veil - adds a nice flare!

P.S. Audrena gave a great piece of advice - to control muffin top, roll up a small bit of pantyhose (like a short snake or tube) and pin in place at the top of your elastic band. Works like a charm - no muffins in sight! - Sabra*

I think it's cute, too, especially since there is minimal fringe on the skirt.

Baby..I have done that because the skirts too short and I had crack showing. I like the look it's a more gypsy pirate kind of a thing what with the red and black..but if you keep the thing...cannabalize the veil for a permanent softening of the hard top line of the skirt and add some drapey bits to the bottoms of the sleeves ala L Rose sleeve treatments to be found on her web site.

I think it's cute with the veil. I also think that the "before" pic is lovely, too. The veil gives the skirt a nice, finshed look. Likey!

Cool. I feel much better about the costume now. That summed it up nicely too - the top of the skirt does look unfinished. So, maybe it is more that than just the muffin top.
I will canabalize the veil thingy because it has the beading on it so it is totally just a cover up anyway.

I really like the idea of the arm drapes too. I have some of the l.rose arm bands with chiffon drapes for other costumes and really like them.

Just adding my "late" opinion -- I like the veil around the top of the skirt, it softens the top edge. As it has been suggested a permanent gathered/drapery thingy would look great! I also don't think you are muffin toppy at all:-) If I could be so lucky.....

it looks very cute with the veil tied around. Not hokey at all!

I think I like it better with the drape. You could purchase a pin (like mature ladies wear on a blazer lapel) with rhinestones to pin it together with for some extra bling.

It looks good just tied as you have it though and it adds an extra little flounce :-)

This sounds very clever. Can you explain in a bit more detail? How long should the pantyhose wrap around top inside of skirt? All the way? Just a bit?

I like it with the veil drape! Not only does it give you a nice line at the hip level, but it also makes the skirt look more custom/unique, less like what everyone else is wearing. Nicely done!

I love it! I really like the idea of adding a rhinestone brooch/pin as well.

And I don't understand the pantyhose trick, I'd like more info too!

What would be nice would be to make a in on medalion with fringe like the one on the bra and skirt.

I love it! It makes your hips look more hour glassy too. I can never get away with tucking a veil in because it makes me look huge!

Thank you! The amazing thing is that my weight has not changed since the before photos. They were taken on 3 weeks ago so I could put the costume up on Ebay. Tieing the veil up like this really did work wonders for the appearance, so I am glad the costume didn't sell now.

I am going to add on chiffon drapes to soften the sleeves too.

You have a lovely figure and there is truly nothing wrong with your figure in either the before of after picture - however, you must truly believe this yourself, as if you are not confident in the costume it will show.

Also - Vahana, if you have "muffin top" in your before picture, then I have "two entire loaves of bread" top. You DON'T have mt. At least, I don't see it.

I think you look great too! The scarf looks wonderful, even more so with a brooch.
