Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"

    And the designer name.

I love a lot of Sahar's designs and I liked Dina's original costume. I think that one did fit the "outrageous, whimsical" description. It looked well made and worked for her.

However, this one, though it may be well made does not look it. As others have noted the hands are poorly shaped and proportioned.
I mean really, what would people think if this was listed on ebay with no Sahar name attached to it?

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"

I LOVE several of Sahar's designs, like the crystal-encrusted bra with the watercolor sarong-style skirt, and the red Valentine one from Dahlal last year, and the one we saw on the Swap Meet with the big red flowers. Even Dina's was a step in the right direction, with a better color scheme and more distinct fingers.

But on that note, I believe that only Dina can pull off the Dina look.

(How appropriate that my co-workers are singing that old Ludacris song "You's a Ho" in the background layer as we're giving commentary on this costume....."Shoot right up to the ho-zone layer!" ..l;, )

I must have watched the video 20 times before I realized the costume had hands on it.
..l;, Oh yeah--I forgot about that one! If I'm remembering it right, almost looks like someone grabbed her from behind and in haste to get away left his/her gloves hanging on her costume. I seem to recall having a "What the...are those...hands???!!!" moment watching that one at one point. ..g.:

Actually, that'd almost make the Dina costume make a little more sense too--it's not just "trashy Dina", it's almost like risque' Dina's wacky homage to Naima. (Given that she studied with Ibraham Akef, that's not necessarily a terrible stretch is it? )

    ...but I still say I'm not sure I know anyone whose pinky finger attaches like the fingers on this particular red-and-mustard Sahar.,r:;

Yeah, I can imagine the last bead and thread being carefully sewn into place and the finished costume being held up with pride and admiration and someone in the background says, "Hey those hands only have four fingers."

    it's always the simplest answer.

    Also name.

Think about it this way..if THAT costume was made by a local seamstress with $200 price tage...what would the reaction be?

Another scenario...that costume is made by a local seamstress with a $2200 price tag...what would the reaction be then?

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"

i was able to see the costume up close, first hand. the pictures make the hands look a lot more odd than they actually are. to me it looked like actual gloves that were heavily beaded were sewn onto the costume. i can't pull off that color gold or that price tag but it really isn't as bad as it seems. the seashell one that has the same price tag- same thing pics dont do it justice. the detail work is AMAzing.

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"

I just saw "the hands" in person this afternoon. I hadn't realized they were 3-dimensional -- looks like a pair of gloves, lightly stuffed, then sewn on and beaded. It's not my fave Sahar. But lots of other amazing creative designs.

Damiena and I just popped in for a minute... hours later our husbands had to come retrieve us!! ..l;,

I have a galabeya like that, only not polka dot. And the hands have green fingernails (yes, my pretty!).

It's not always about physical hands, but about the khamis/5amis. The number 5 is associated with good luck in Egypt, and I'm sure other countries, too. Some variations on this theme, however, seem to be less about the 5amis...

I love Dina's version of the costume because it's classier, and she can tell the Vice Squad that the hands are for good luck

I think this version here on the thread would look better if there were hands on the hips, too. More balance
