Oh Sahar Okasha. I love your sense of whimsy, your attentiveness to detail and the way your designs deliciously hug a woman's curves....but you've truly, umm, outdone yourself this time around.....
I can excuse ONE god-awful fugly "hands" costume, but the trickle-down effect could be horrifying. Low-end knockoffs will pop up on Ebay like toadstools after a thunderstorm.
The only way I'd improve upon this design would be to add a crassel.

it's kind of like a costume Babara Streisand wore in the movie "The Owl and the Pussy Cat" but I think the one Babs wore was a nightgown not sure anyone else remember?

A local dancer tried on the red and white striped Sahar and it looks absolutely divine on! It looks a little awkward on the mannequin, but in person, it is really pretty! And, go ahead and smack me, but I like the hands costume. I think it is crazy and whimsical and outrageous and would take just the right dancer to pull it off successfully. I envision it on a dancer who is one heck of a dancer and super confident, with a wicked sense of humor that comes across in her dancing!

It may not be her style but goddess-hamburger-flippin' Habib could get away with it. ..g.:

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"
i wish the hands were on the barber pole costume ;)
and it should have hands on the booty too!
my problem with the "hands" motif is that every stripper in the early 90's had a version of a "hands" bra [and a "cher" mesh one piece with the big v in front] so the "hands" will always look like strippers to me, not streisandLast edited by sabrinabellydancer; 02-14-2008 at 03:10 AM. I like the candy cane cossie too! The helping hands...I don't think so! At least not that particular one. I like the one Dina has on, though it definitely NOT something I would wear...
I can't think of another dancer who could get away with it either.
I LOVE the skirt Dina has on

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"
I think to me the worst part about the hands costume (well...apart from the obvious...) is that while Dina's "hands" looked reasonably well proportioned and shaped for hands, the color/fabric/texture was carried through the costumes in the gold mylar in the skirt, and the rest of the design is fairly simple/unadorned so it all works as one costume...Sahar's current design looks more like a pair of red mittens happlessly flung on the breasts of an otherwise pretty "together" costume (at least from what you can see in the photo.) They're misshapen and odd and don't seem to "go" with the rest of the look. I, too, love her for her creativity and willingness to "go there" and try something different...and I think her original for Dina was...well...objectively an interesting and fashionable look (whether tactful/tasteful being another matter for debate). This one just misses the mark.
The candy cane...yeah, I can see where that might be one of those costumes that would look really great on the right person/moving. Doesn't do much on the manequin in the pix, but some of the best costumes don't look good like much 'till you put them on a real human and start moving.... :-)

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"
Tee hee. I think it's funny! I'd die of laughter if someone came out with that on stage. In a good way, really. Sometimes we all take ourselves too seriously.
Mind you, I wouldn't wear it myself... and it's not exactly "pretty". But it IS fun.
$2,200 is a crazy price though! Still, I bet someone will pay it because it rivals Dina's costume.

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"
Actually, yes, you did. If any of you have the Hossam Ramzy Stars of Egypt series, Naima Akef has a costume with big hands/gloves on it. I can't remember which video it is, and I'm at work right now so I can't check, but I do remember it's polka dot, and there are hands across each cup of her bra and also hands on her hips. The ones on her hips look like they might actually BE gloves stitched onto the costume. I'd swear they stick out a bit from her sides.
I must have watched the video 20 times before I realized the costume had hands on it.

Re: Now You Too, Can Own "The Hands"
Just curious....why is it that a costume like this (more overtly sexual) can be excusable for its whimsy, yet the cheap "Madonna" costume on the Swap Meet page, with its bulls-eye bra, is unanimously touted as tacky? What is the appeal?
I understand Sahar's construction defies gravity and her fit is impeccable....and I do understand that aesthetics are subjective....but regardless of price point and what Egyptian mega-star wore it, it reads as just another trashy, fugly costume with a sketchy motif, to me. Not even the mustard and barbeque sauce color combination endears to me. ..c::
(And this costuming gripe is coming from a girl who spent several Saturday nights covering an entire bra and belt with tiny seashells, crystals and pearls because she fancies the mermaid look so much! ..l;, )
Not to start a scholarly debate, but as a costume aficionada, I'm very interested in dissecting Sahar's unique je ne sais quois. What makes this costume "whimsical" and the Turkish Airport Special equivalent "trashy?"
