Thread: False eylashes: apply before or after makeup?

I have been practicing false eyelash application -- the strip kind. I've read previous threads here on bhuz and also found some online sites with tips and tricks.

One major point of disagreement among people seems to be when to apply them -- before or after eye makeup.

So, experienced eyelash users -- when do you apply them?

A. absolutely first on squeaky clean eyelids, before any eye makeup, foundation, primer, etc.?

B. absolutely last?

C. in the middle some where?

For me, in the middle somewhere. After primer/foundation/eye shadow, I use some black or dark brown eye shadow along the lash line, then apply thin line of liquid liner, apply fake lashes, finish off liquid liner to get final shape (with winged ends etc). End with some mascara but I don't overdo it if I use fake lashes.
I avoid using eye shadow after doing the lashes and liner because I find it smudges it, makes it less defined.

I do in the middle, but near the end. I vaguely remember that was when we put them on during Azhia's makeup workshop. At least eyeliner goes on after.

I finally got the hang of the things..and my eye tissue is less than young skin taute, so I find that if I muck about with with various brushes to apply more "stuff", it breaks the glue bead...usually at either corner of the eyelid. So I leave it for last..placing liner over the strip. I use less makeup this way, but I think the look should get more natural as you get older anyway to avoid the "tranny granny" look.

I agree totally that 'less is more' as you get older. I just can't wear a lot of black eyeliner or the 'winged' look any more. Tranny granny -- hee hee

I put mine on near the beginning because I still have trouble sometimes. If the lash application isn't going well that day, it's no big deal to take them off, wash my face, and start over.

I curl my lashes & put on mascara and liner. Then apply fakes. Then foundation and the rest of my face.

If I ever get lash application down to a science, though, I'm sure I'll do it last.

I do all my eye makeup except the mascara then on go the fake lashes, then I reapply or touch up liquid liner where it seems necessary and put on mascara. Then I do the rest of my face after my eyes.

For those who put on mascara after fake lashes --

I'm always afraid I'll dislodge them with the brush, that doesn't happen? Does it make them harder to remove if they're mascara'd in with your real lashes? Does it make them harder to re-use, or does the mascara clean off easily?

I think it's personal preference and your particular work flow and how you handle applying products before, during, or after lashes.
I'd say experiment and see what you feel most comfortable with and what gives you the desired result. :0)

Well..I did manage to drop mine in the sink while trying to clean off the mascara with makeup remover and warm water....gone...

That's only happened to me once since I've used this method, and that just meant they weren't put on properly. I'd rather find out that a lash is loose while doing my make-up than while on stage. I don't think the mascara make a difference in removal (just the amount of adhesive you use). And it comes right off when you wash them.

I usually save lashes and mascara for the very end of the make-up process (with one sweep of liner first and then touch-up after the lashes are set if needed).
