I am going to be updating power point presentations I show to my students on costuming and posture.
I'd like to add some pictures of the following:
poor posture (dropped upper body, tilted pelvis, tense shoulders, etc)
costume fitting issues
Bras: bras that don't fit just right, bra straps too long, cups too big or not big enough, armpit cleavage, not enough support)
Belts: gaps, plumbers crack, fringe too long for short dancers,
Skirts: skirts too short, not evenly hemmed, etc
General: wrong or unflattering style, suboptimal color coordination, etc.
Makeup/hair: not eough, too much, wrong, etc.
Okay so here is the request for brave souls. Does anyone have photos of themselves demonstrating these negative qualities? Who would be willing to let me use them in a classroom? (*not* printed out, *not* distributed electronically, *not* published on the web). I'm happy to show a bad/good or before/after contrast.
I will now wait for the crickets to start chirping....,r:;

Re: a request for brave souls
oh I definitely have some. Haha...
how about facial expressions? I know that doesn't fit into your costuming/posture categories, but man... I'm the queen of making weird/ugly/funky ass faces while dancing

Oh, I've got a great one for you. It's a Bad Taste Trifecta: unflattering cut, bad fit, AND a beautiful color that looks terrible against my skin. (Also the worst possible camera angle for nearly everyone's bod, but that's the one thing that's not my fault.) In addition, it conveniently shows that a dress isn't a safe choice if isn't the right dress. Interested?
I imagine I'm not the only one who will ask that this not be for online sharing. No offense to our beloved baby bellies, but if you're marketing yourself as a performing artist these days, you're more likely to be trying to keep ugly photos of yourself off the Internet as much as possible than posting them publicly on purpose.
(I actually found this scary one online: the manager of the venue took it and posted it on the venue's website without permission -- fortunately also without identifying details!)

Re: a request for brave souls
Wow! I'm amazed how quickly our fellow Bhuzzers began queing up for this little project. To date, Sedonia has pulled most of the examples used from the fashion/ advertising media (2/3 to 3/4). Only a smaller portion of the examples used (up until now) have been from "the dance". This will be a great boon to our students in their education.
There was one video night during this past year that we hosted for our students in which an unfortunate choice in costume inadvertently ended up being shown to the group (we'd been trying to keep the clips to people and performances that exemplified the best in the dance to us). I was absolutely amazed when every student present immediately *got* how the poor choice in costuming/ costume elements completely destroyed the performance. So a picture *can* be worth a thousand words (or save a thousand words).

Please feel free to show them this picture that I lovingly call Zombie Belly Dancer Needs BRAINS!

My hands and arms are so hideous in this picture I cringe looking at it. It's 3 years old though, and I've made 100% improvement in them since then.

Re: a request for brave souls
For me at least it's safe on two counts: nobody in your neighborhood knows me from a tree, and the photo doesn't look anything like me!
Well, hmm...I was considering submitting a shot taken in a good dress as well, out of vanity and for contrast, but perhaps it's best to preserve my anonymity.

Re: a request for brave souls
I'm sorry, I'm perfect, so I have none...
..l;, ..l;, ..l;, ..l;, ..l;, ..l;, ..l;, ..l;,
If I had any on this computer I'd totally share. There are videos that can be used for extortion and you won't find those on YouTube.
Photographers who are not used to shooting movement happen to only shoot the awful claw/hunched/rolled back eye shots.
It's nice to show all examples, actually. Great idea!
Unsolicited advice: Be generous with the positive/after examples. If students hold bad examples in their minds too long, they might start to manifest. .w.:Last edited by Azhia; 03-04-2008 at 10:19 PM.
