It isn't working for me...I'm looking for the post reminding everyone that the Cifuentes were in Milwalke 22 Oct ... because I wanted to bump it and ask how it went etc (yeah, I'm nosey!) - google finds the page but won't let's me open; gives me a 404 can't find message

Same here, google found the links to the pages I wanted but gave "Page not found" when I tried to open them.

This method will work for now, but there are a few problems.

For one thing, it'll let you view old threads but not post on them. This is obvious when you think about what's actually happening. The old threads were on the old server, which is no longer there. That's why clicking the actual link from google doesn't work, but clicking the word 'cached' does: google copies entire pages every so often, and keeps them around for some time on its own servers. What you're looking at when you click on the cached link is not the original content, it's just a copy. If you try clicking the reply button on a google cache copy of a thread (or any link of any kind that attempts to open a different page for that matter), it'll give you another error page. The thing you're looking at isn't even a 'thread' anymore, because it's not on a forum. It's on google's caching server, and google's caching server won't do anything with it except show it to you, and eventually throw it out.

That's the second problem: google caches are temporary. It sometimes takes a few months, but google will eventually delete all the old threads.

There are other, smaller problems as well. For one, the cache is incomplete. A page with few or no views, which in this case means a thread that's rarely been read, isn't 'worth' caching as far as google's algorithm is concerned, so it doesn't have a copy of unpopular threads like that.

The bottom line here is that if you want to use threads from before the move, you have to actually migrate the content of the old forums to the new ones. Otherwise, anyone who wants (for instance) to know if any pictures or video from the 2007 Cairo Nile Group Festival have survived will simply have to look elsewhere.
