Tahtil Shibbak Fifi Style

Just received the Fifi workshop Sat show video from Little Egypt and started watching it as I am home today while the AC repair guys install a new compressor.

For those who weren't there in person--Fifi does Tahtil Shibbak and it seemed that there was this constant low rumbling, moaning, zaghareeting roar in the audience. Fifi touched her feet in the appropriate places by kicking her feet up behind her and touching the heel. That woman can SHIMMY! If Mary from SYTYCD were there she would have Fifi on the Hot Tamale Train!

Fifi touched her feet in the appropriate places by kicking her feet up behind her and touching the heel.

There are places in the song (not places on her feet!) where you often see dancers point at their feet and then point or gesture upward, because the lyric goes something like "I kiss your feet, please do not look up." This is variously interpreted along the lines of: I'm your servant because I'm crazy about you, but don't look up here to my window because I'm shy/it's not proper/it would break my heart/it would drive me wild.

Hi Souzan,
Just watched the Fifi Saturday show video last night. It was wonderful, loved her costume changes and performances. Fifi was looking great and she looked like she had more stanima then last years event ..g.: (really motivates me into me wanting to get back in shape and lose weight even more/ so far lost 12lbs. this year). Definately worth getting for those of you who are Fifi fans. The video quality was pretty decent as well. Now have to make time to watch the workshop DVDs.

Tammy, I did notice a couple of times when she was motioning to the band to slow it down a little--one place where she pointed at them and then made the sleepytime gesture, head on hands until they took it down to a taqsim for her.

Costumes--I saw four. A black dress where she tied the green veil around her hips when she was done with it, the blue/turquoise shiny galabyia, the black assuit, and the white galabyia for the Fifi Shisha Pipe number.

Didn't you love the debke guys? I think these may be the same four who came over here to do a debke class at a local hookah bar that is frequented by young Arab Americans. I rember that they were college students in Texas and met up with their buddies here in Tallahassee to teach debke. I was so impressed because they had driven over from Texas and were dancing the night away after that long drive. It was summer and the debke class was held at night on an outdoor deck outside the hookah bar. In between the debke sets, some of the Arab high school and college girls would get together and dance and they came over and invited me to join them. We got in a big circle and one dancer at a time would get in the middle and solo. The best time!!

The police came and shut the whole thing down because of drummers and the stomping on the deck were too loud.

I started watching the Dr. Mo modern beledi workshop dvd and love it so far. Every one of his workshop dvds I have is like a gem. He talked about making oneself larger than life, expanding to fill your dancer's space, what the dance looks like from the audience point of view vs. the dancer's point of view. Great stuff.

I liked the Debke dance as well. A Debke class sounds like fun..g.: . I still have to get to the Dr. Mo's DVDs (maybe sometime today). Watched one of Fifi's workshop videos today. Your addicted to the videos as much as me (hehe) !

Cool - I wasn't sure if they cut it out or not because it was so long. That was my favorite part of the show.... I got all teary when Fifi was in front of me, doing her thing. Just one helluvanawesome moment.

The camera doesn't show her performing the whole routine, when she is performing the shisha in the audience area, it only shows the audience members, when she dances on the side lines for the audience members (when she dances out of the view of the camera). They might of cut some of it though, because on the DVD it didn't seem so long.

Cool to be in front. At her first show in Dallas, I was inches from the stage when she was performing..g.: . Even though I attended this show, I still have to get the DVD of it.
