my favorite dancers in Japan!!
These are my favorites for various reasons. Awesome Anze- check out Anze Japan or pharonic odyssey on u-tube!! She's from Okinawa. Check out Danisa from Osaka, Japan. Mishaal from Tokyo, Japan!! I've seen guest dancers from Tokyo with tribal fusion I like better but these are main dancers here for classical and modern Egyptian. Incredible talent. I"m Leaving japan for a short while soon but I take them in my heart as inspiration until I return!!!

Re: my favorite dancers in Japan!!
Mishaal's like a gazelle. Fluid movements.
my teacher doesn't want us taking lessons from her because she's so jealous of her. Very sad.
Wil return to board in about 2 weeks to a month. enjoy mishaal and let her inspire you.Last edited by Tribetiger; 07-25-2008 at 06:44 PM.

Mishaal is an amazing person and dancer, such an inspiration, and so graceful and tactful in all corespondance with her. Danisa I have also heard great things about raving reviews from friends and students about her work shop here on okinawa,
I have only one thing to say in ref to okinawa, I have edited this post so i am not negative instead i add something positive........See post below....Last edited by annwyn; 07-26-2008 at 06:17 AM.

Yes, they are great dancers albeit not well known. Amira and I started dancing around the same time. She is also a dear friend of many years. It is nice to hear she is receiving the acclaim she deserves! Here is her Myspace page.

When Mishaal gets me the clips of performing at the Artemis show, I'll post them...I enjoy the Balkan clips of me out there, but that's about it and everything is sort of out of date.
....but I >DID< make the gold bedlah Farasha is wearing in that clip and that is at my art opening.

Re: my favorite dancers in Japan!!
Hi Tribetiger,
did you mean just what the title says DANCERS ?
Or did you mean belly dancers (which is what Bhuz.com is about) ?
I see no real belly dancing in most of videos. Many are slide or short movies assembled together just for that hot oriental(ist) image. This is true. Pls see for yourself. Music is mostly not oriental, too. I can tell you why in separate discussion.
If you mean belly dancers I have totally different dancers to talk about:
SADIA - she is long time leading star here, she hosted Liza Laziza recently, and she is teacher to such famous stars who now dance in Egypt like Kasumi (you can see her in some of Raqia Hassan`s videos).
and
Karima - student of M. Reda and Yousry Shariff; she danced in Egypt for many years, and hosts big names incl. Raqia Hassan workshops in Tokyo.
These are my favourite Belly Dancers here in Japan.
(And then, me...
Join my fan club anybody, will ya ... ?)

Re: my favorite dancers in Japan!!
Farasha may be poorly edited in some of those, but I'd call her a real bellydancer:
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6LO_oKT94c]YouTube - Farasha Tokyo Bellydancer[/ame]
My local favorites include Zizi
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU5_hh4Drxw]YouTube - Yukiko NileGroup November 2008 winner[/ame]
I'd show a clip of Nourah but most of those are of her more fusion oriented work traveling with Baba Zula and I'm not in the mood to see her get slagged as well.
Sadia has been here for a while and has a respectable following. I've enjoyed what shows I've seen her put on.
Karima and Ainy are really the parents of the scene here...but they both first learned in America over 20 years ago and brought it back to Japan BEFORE either of them went to Egypt. Mishaal also did the Turkey scene (although those clips are not of her oriental work) and has an impressive resume and hosts a good deal of workshops and majority of the workshops in Tokyo with Turkish dancers. All four of these teachers (I include Sadia) have spawned a few generations of great teachers here in Tokyo.
I'm sure you'll agree, the sad lack of good you tube clips does nothing to really illuminate our scene here!
I'm curious why you dug this old thread up...it's...what..6 months past the last post? If you have something positive to add about your instructor and the studio you are with, why not leave it at that?
Will you be at the Aziza workshop in Golden Week? I know you've been in Tokyo for a while but I don't think our paths have ever crossed outside of bhuz...or really much on bhuz even when I've asked you follow up questions.Last edited by ozma; 04-30-2009 at 08:27 AM.

Re: my favorite dancers in Japan!!
Amira, bring us You Tube clips of the dancers you like! Tell us more about yourself...maybe even some clips of yourself...a website....and perhaps we will! Stay and have a discussion right here instead of "a separate discussion" and let us get to know you. Stay and talk!
I can tell you right now, in case you go looking, most youtube stuff of me is not representative of my Turkish Oriental work...sometimes it's hard to have control over which of your work people will want to film and get excited about... and many of the clips are a few years old and don't represent my core work....but if you also wanna knock me for not being Oriental enough, go ahead.Last edited by ozma; 04-30-2009 at 10:18 AM.

Re: my favorite dancers in Japan!!
I meant a separate discussion about music...
Um, I dug up this thread because I was curious... what exists here around me. I don`t know the local scene here (I hate giving unfavourable comments, that`s why I am not really interested in most local dancers in Japan and Czech Republic, too; I only keep in touch with my teacher and few close friends). Most of local stars are somebody`s students, so I don`t care to study with them when I can study with their teachers or even with teachers of their teachers ... I save my money to go to Egypt and study with master teachers like Diana instead. Same for Aziza`s workshop and bdss disorganized show.
You are right, the lack of Youtube footage of dancers I like is striking. While those I "slagged" as you say, have plenty of clips...
Um, I was joking when I said "Join my fan club...".
Sleep well, my cherished thread!

Re: my favorite dancers in Japan!!
If you want to get to know the scene here and you read Japanese (or enough to skim and figure things out) get on Mixi and join a few of the bellydance groups or pick up Bellydance Japan Magazine and see what upcoming events they recommend.
I know it isn't always easy to decide "hey, I'm going to go by myself to an event" ..but after a few you get used to it and it can be nice to plunk yourself down in an event where you don't know anyone because you won't have to comment on everything!
No one is going to ask a stranger to give them a review of what they thought of it all! Plus, you're foreign so you have the option of "not speaking the language"
Even if the performers aren't ones you'd wind up wanting to study with, seeing a wide range of dancers is good for anyone's skill set.
