    Anyone else a Jillina fan?

I am new and just beginning my dvd collection. I stumbled upon a Jillina instructional dvd and really like her choreo/teaching method. Then I watched BDSS performance dvds. Anyone else a fan? She just seems to have a good time.

I'm a jillina fan and followed a couple of workshops with her and I have most of her dvd's. It's very nice to see how her dance style has changed through the years.

What impresses me is that the way that she choreographs really works for me, I'm trying to learn how to do that myself!

I love Jillina. I have all of her instructionals, actually, including the Egyptian Pop and Drum Solo choreography. They are all structured similarly, with technique, then combinations, then choreography. The first three that Miles put out are my favorite, but the new set is growing on me quite a bit. It just seems like her style has changed a bit from the first set to the second set and I haven't quite adjusted to it yet.

I saw her live for the first time last weekend, and while I have always admired her in an objective really-done-alot-for-the-dance sort of way, I well and truly fell in love with her as a performer that night. I have rarely seen a dancer so completely captivate an audience the way she did. Really, really impressed.

She is an amazing performer and a very good and giving teacher. One of my favorite dance memories is seeing her in a club with a live band. Really special.

Funny you should ask - this is how I got my start too. In fact when I first started learning, I did only Jillina videos for months (yes, it took me that long at first). So I consider my first teacher. She is still one of my favorites almost five years later!

Are the ones that Miles put out the "Instructional Bellydance with Jillina vol 1,2,3.?" I love the format. Tell me more about the set that's growing on you. How has her style changed? For the good or bad?

hookednovice, I wouldn't say that her style changed in a good or bad way, it's just different. She was amazing then and she's amazing now!

I love Jillina. She just seems to have her own style, and sticks with it. Her videos are always si much fun! When I saw her years ago with BDSS, she got up on Issam's tabla and danced a whole solo! It was great.

Who isn't a Jillina fan? She is fabulous!! I like when her videos show her from behind but also in the mirror so you can see her front and back side at the same time. She explians things well on her videos as well as in her workshops. She is a very good instructor, and I think she is easy to learn from because she explains technique well.

Yes, those are the Miles ones. Now she has a new set of 4. They have the same format, only better, with the ability to run through only practice without the instruction, or only instruction. The newest ones are available from her site and the set contains an Entrance Choreo, a Pop Choreo, a Drum Solo Choreo and a Fitness DVD. My favorite one is the Pop Choreo. They all have the technique sections, with plenty of practice. Then she does the combos, again with practice. Finally, she does the choreo - and after you learn each section, you perform with her everything you know so far, plus the next section...and it continues to the end.

Her style has become more uniquely Jillina, which is a really good thing for her. She still has a lot of turns which seem to be a hallmark of her style. That's something I've picked up from her. She also does a lot of hair-tossing, and you see that in her drum-solo DVD - she's always done that (going back to her first drum solo dvd from IAMED.) I definitely see the evolution in the drum solo dvds, having gone from fairly simple to very complicated. She also had added in a lot of Reda-style movements. The new DVDs are definitely more challenging than the first set.

My only problem with the new DVDs is that the music and movements are not always matched up, particularly noticeable on Entrance Choreo but also on the Lebanese Pop DVD. For a while I felt I was always one-step behind and the choreography seemed unmatched to the music. Then I tried doing the choreography facing away from the TV, to the music and it fit perfectly. I talked to a friend about this and she agreed - that there is a one-second delay or so.

Yes to explain why I haven't quite adjusted yet and it's growing on me - if I didn't make it clear, it's because her DVDs have gotten more challenging!

I don't always LIKE a challenge - but I force myself to do it over & over again until I conquer it anyway.

I want to get her new drum solo dvd next. Do you think it's too hard for a beginner to learn? I am currently learning her vol. 2 dvd (the Miles series) and It's slow going but I can do it. What do you think?

Re: Anyone else a Jillina fan?

The drum solo DVD may actually be easier than the others.

For me, turns, directional changes, and fast footwork is confusing.
Anything to do with the hips is easy. So the drum solo choreography is actually easier than the other two...for me.

I still struggle with some of the directional changes and the "Reda" moves on the Entrance Choreography.

I have a few instructional DVD's and I must admit Jillina's are excellent. I do like how she uses the mirrors, it's easier to follow and her teaching method and style is awe inspiring.

I did the one with IAMED before I did her Instructional 3 and found it easier than Instructional 3. I had only been bellydancing for four months and that was before I found a teacher - just doing DVDs only. So I know you won't have a problem.
