I have a question for those who have attended her workshops: has she explained her shimmy technique? Hers is phenomenal.

Her English is limited, but I remember her exact words from two years ago.
"it's the waist" (I think she meant hips)
"not the leg, not the leg"
"no knee"
"not here" (pointing to legs), "here" (pointing to hips)
"not the leg" (yes, again and repeatedly while looking directly at people doing vigorous knee shimmies)
Her's is an "old school" Egyptian shimmy, before Raqia started teaching and rocked the raq world. The knee shimmy is considered "more lady like" and comes from folklore troupe work. The knee shimmy is much easier to teach and "get"- so it's great for teaching the masses.

Yes Fifis shimmy is definately not a Raqia shimmy. Once one of my teachers explained how to do the shimmy but unfortunatly Ive forgotten...

I guess the Fifi vids are from Samasem's personnal archives, but you can ask her through Youtube.

On one the Fifi workshop videos from LE she definitely says that it comes from "inside" and not "outside" and points to her abs. I suspect that she is using obliques and hip flexors (not glutes, which she seems to keep soft) and the shimmy bubbles up from below the solar plexus.

I was watching her do shimmies and she puts the weight on her heels: you could even see her toes lift up a bit while she was shimming. That could also explain why her shimmies travel so high up the body.
