name drop! :) leila of cairo slumber party

leila is in the northwest for a hafla and workshops this weekend, and totally last minute, she and her son joey are going to be staying at my house (the perk of having a toddler of my own, so my house is already kid proof!). I'm excited because leila is a really, really lovely person and I'm looking forward to hanging out with her and making her breakfast. :)

if anybody has any burning questions about dance or life in cairo you'd like me to slip into conversation, I'll do my best! just let me know.

Aww, give baby Yousef a squeeze for me!

Leila mentioned on one of her trips here that "there are like 7 or 8 beledies - something like that." I wasn't able to follow up with her. If possible, could you please ask her to expand??

yeah! she has three - a sleek red one with blue and white tiny crystals, a baby blue one with slits up the front of each leg, snowflake shaped crystals and little tiny shorts (and little tiny dina-style bra), and a really elegant blue dress... she doesn't want to take them home so they'll all be for sale.

Re: name drop! :) leila of cairo slumber party

joanne: leila said she doesn't have any other US dates planned this year. usually the same people host her, and they tend to bring her every other year. so next year. :) she'll be in mexico in the spring...

nasila: I asked leila about the beledi thing, and she also brought it up in the workshop she taught. basically (my paraphrasing here!), she's referring to the baladi taqsim/progression form. there are 7 or 8 of them that people do over and over (listen to 10 different baladis on 10 different cds and you'll notice they all use a lot of the same motifs and chunks of melodies, right?). people will also compose new ones sometimes, but basically you will just hear the same ones.

an interesting tidbit on baladis: the workshop she taught was about "what is egyptian dance" - what are the elements of dance that make it authentically sharqi, according to an egyptian. some of it was posture and technique, but most of it was all about your emotional connection to the song, via understanding the lyrics (whether sung or not), both literally and what they mean in a cultural context. she took us through "ansak" several times, translating for us as we danced through it. but then we were let off the hook as she let us dance to baladis: they don't have lyrics so all you have to do is be the music. :)

costumes: somebody bought the red one, and I'll be posting the eman light blue snowflake mermaid costume and the turquoise aida noor beledi dress (unless it fits me, in which case I'm going to keep it!) to the swap board as soon as I get pics on a body.

I tried on the dress last night, and, well, sorry. it's mine now. :) lol!!! it's turquoise with metallic "bubbles" on the fabric, with a diagonal mesh insert in the front and a zigzag mesh insert at the hem, with big chunky pear shaped jewels and rhinestone chain fringe. it's so elegant it makes me cry!

I'll see if I can post the pic of the other one - if not, email me at elisagamal@gmail.com and I'll send it to you direct.

    wow, thanks Elisa Gamal!

Joanne, Leila will be teaching/judging in Tijuana in May, super close to the border (like 5-minute drive) for Racks Divine, along with Shazadi of Mexico. I don't know if I can resist that combo! :)

seriously, I just did a quick google and couldn't find much. You wouldn't happen to have any website or contact info? Or do you happen to know which weekend? It sounds fun.

I giggled about that too....pondered whether or not my rack is divine enough to attend in the first place. ;)
